Job Description
Essential Job functions:
- Assist the physician and staff with the daily coordination of patient care and physician access.
- Function as the liaison between patients, staff, and physicians.
- Maintain efficient patient flow.
- Deliver direct patient care within the scope of licensure and in accordance with SUMMIT policy.
- Collect lab specimens according to departmental guidelines. Accurately label specimens.
- Prioritize patient care by implementing physician orders and nursing procedures.
- Ensure proper preparation for patient visits and prepare pertinent information needed for each visit.
- Effectively communicate problems, concerns, or issues to the Office Supervisor/Manager appropriately and promptly.
- Ensure all patients are correctly identified prior to providing and/or documenting care.
- Employ appropriate and timely use of Tasking in EHR.
- Obtain vital signs: BP, temp, pulse, height & weight accurately and completely as required. Document appropriately in EHR.
- Administer injections according to appropriate protocol and document injections accurately in EHR.
- Demonstrate telephone triage protocols and document in EHR.
- Schedule appointments appropriately and accurately according to department guidelines.
- Adhere to universal safety precautions when administering medications and disposing of medical waste.
- Review and update medication lists in EHR. Demonstrate understanding of prescription control and prescription refill procedures. Document known allergies in EHR accurately and completely.
- Enter orders and schedule appointments in the Practice Management System (PMS) and EHR appropriately.
- Provide referrals and/or consult orders appropriately and in a timely manner in the PMS and EHR.
- Check and maintain logs for emergency equipment according to policy.
- Facilitate transition of care to UCC/Hospital.
- Maintain proficiency with department-specific equipment and troubleshoot/report malfunctions promptly.
Chemotherapy Infusion Department:
- Cross-train to mix chemotherapy when pharmacy backup is needed.
- Support and cross-train RN Navigation/Triage.
- Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, antibiotics, symptom management, and provide patient education including coordination of patient care activities with other members of the health care team.
- Manage Central Line Catheters such as Port-a-Cath and PICC lines.
- Provide care according to the individualized needs of the patient using the nursing process and in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act.
Charge Responsibilities (as applicable per department need):
- Serve as the primary point person for staffing call-outs and reshuffling staff/filling shifts (as assigned by day – mostly weekends).
- Act as the key point of contact for the assigned day to address questions, issues, patient complaints, and closing sites (with manager involvement).
- Assist with scheduling of staff, as needed.
- Coordinate the shift and patient flow both inter and intra department.
- Serve as a resource within the unit and to other departments regarding unit-specific best practices.
- Assign roles for the day, including triage assignments.
- Assist triage to determine patient assignment to appropriate service area.
- Proactively monitor and manage shift staffing to meet patient needs and productivity targets.
- Collaborate with department supervisor to optimally manage shift crises.
- Demonstrate ability to set priorities and adapt quickly to new situations.
- Identify work-related problems with possible solutions and implement solutions within the scope of practice in collaboration with the clinical supervisor.
- Oversee daily computerized task list and manage time-sensitive results.
- Plan, organize, and coordinate daily operations, including sick calls as needed.
- Help provide coverage for breaks and lunches.
- Document in Electronic Medical Records with proficiency.
- Ensure all daily, opening, and closing processes are completed.
- Serve as the primary point person for all operating questions.
- Assist providers in Peer to Peer calls and hospital admits.
- Complete e-risk documentation for code team response and ensure supply replenishment.
- Maintain equipment, safety compliance, and supplies for the assigned location.
- Read daily huddle, update board as needed.
- Serve as a role model and mentor; teach, guide, and support the clinical staff.
- Live, model, apply, and assure the delivery of quality care.
- Participate in activities that promote professional growth and development of self and others.
- Communicate (both written and orally) effectively and maintain professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, and guests.
- Demonstrate awareness of and support departmental and SMG goals through participation in continuous quality improvement and departmental activities.
- Ensure policies and procedures are properly communicated and adhered to.
- Attend Clinical staff meetings.
- Contribute to accreditation process as needed.
General Job functions:
- Assist in ordering and maintaining all supplies as assigned.
- Demonstrate flexibility with various work schedules.
- Other duties as required.
Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:
- Associate's degree required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Oregon State Nursing License and BLS certification required.
- 0 – 1 years experience. 2-4 years experience preferred.
- Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to perform diverse work assignments with time limitations with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to use problem-solving, critical thinking, and priority-setting skills.
- Experience with Standard Office Equipment (Phone, Fax, Copy Machine, Scanner, Email/Voice Mail) preferred.
- Experience with Standard Office Technology in a Windows-based environment preferred.
- Experience with patient care equipment preferred.
- Experience with EHR, Practice Management System, and Departmental/Ancillary Systems preferred.
In addition to the above requirements, if the position is in the Chemotherapy Infusion department, the below are also considered:
- 3 years’ oncology experience preferred.
- OCN preferred.
- ONS Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certification within 90 days of hire/transfer.
- Excellent peripheral IV skills.
Travel:
Ability to commute to satellite offices as needed.
