Job DescriptionThe Surgical Technician performs technical skills and provides assistance to surgeons, anesthesia personnel, registered nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. This position works under the supervision of the registered nurse in delivering safe, effective care to the patient during the intraoperative period. This position effectively interacts with patients and health care team members while maintaining the surgical department standards; participates in surgical procedures on patients of all age groups, pediatric through geriatrics, and may assist in circulating duties under the direct supervision of a qualified Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
- Assists the surgeon during procedures by passing correct instrumentation and anticipating needed instrumentation, supplies, and equipment.
- Responsible for preparation of the sterile field for surgical cases, including instrumentation, supplies, and equipment. Maintains accurate immediate use sterilization logs/practices consistent with the organization's policy and procedures.
- Disassembles, cleans, sterilizes, and stores procedure trays, instruments, equipment, and supplies according to prescribed procedures and aseptic techniques.
- Performs all responsibilities/duties required, as defined in the scope of service, to ensure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
- Maintains current knowledge/certification.
- Assists in other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and organization.
- May be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.
QualificationsMinimum Education- Technical Diploma/Certificate in Practical Nursing or Surgical Technology Required
- Certificate of Completion from Military trained corpsmen or Hospital on-the-job training program Required
Minimum Work Experience- 1-3 years of Surgical Technologist experience in an acute care or outpatient facility Preferred
Licenses and Certifications- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Florida or eligible compact state Upon Hire Required
- BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) from the American Heart Association Upon Hire Required
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities- Possesses a strong character and unyielding sense of integrity with a "surgical conscious".
- Exceptional attention to detail and follow-through.
- Ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality and accuracy.
- Ability to stand for long periods and strength to hold extremities and/or instrument retractors for long periods.
- Good memory, able to anticipate surgeon and patient needs well in advance.
- Ability to read and understand the English language.
- Knowledge of instrument tracking computer software preferred.
- Knowledge of sterilization and disinfection.
- Knowledge of anatomy related to procedures.
- Able to assemble, troubleshoot, and safely operate all equipment as necessary for procedures.
- Demonstrates the principles of asepsis and consistently maintains sterile technique. Monitors for and calls attention to breaks in technique and communicates to Circulating RN and Surgeon.
- In conjunction with RN, conducts accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to departmental policy.
- Assists the Circulating RN and Anesthesia provider in positioning patients and maintaining their safety.
- Performs surgical scrub according to departmental policies.
