The Department of Medicine seeks a Transfusion Medicine Physician to join the Transfusion Medicine Service at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Our Transfusion Medicine Service provides a wide range of consultative services to many areas of the Medical Center including our Level 1 Trauma Center and our transplant program.
The Transfusion Medicine physician's duties include rotations as Transfusion Medicine Attending Physician for the Blood Bank, Blood Donor Center, and Transfusion Medicine clinical services of the Division. Specifically, activities include:
- Interpretation of serological workups, investigation of reported transfusion reactions, provision of medical decision-making for blood product orders and transfusion practices.
- In the Blood Donor Center, duties include providing medical decision-making regarding donor management and deferrals, and counseling donors as necessary and appropriate on deferral as well as otherwise helping to maintain the Donor Deferral Registry.
- Clinical duties include covering the therapeutic services (including but not limited to therapeutic phlebotomy, therapeutic apheresis, and collections for cellular therapy) of the Transfusion Medicine Clinic, outpatient clinical sessions, inpatient consultations as requested by the medical staff, and participation in the night and weekend on-call schedule for Transfusion Medicine.
Academic rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Teaching opportunities will include informal and didactic teaching, and direct supervision of medical students, clinical pathology and anesthesiology residents and hematology/oncology fellows who rotate through the Service.
Candidates are encouraged to participate in basic, translational or clinical research projects, as collaborator or principal investigator, and to pursue projects that lead to presentations at national meetings and publications in journals in relevant fields (including transfusion medicine, apheresis medicine and hematology).
The successful candidate will have a background in pathology, internal medicine or hematology, with further training in transfusion medicine. Selected candidates expected to maintain certification in Transfusion Medicine from the American Board of Pathology.
