Job Summary:
Assist in the efficient, timely and accurate preparation of NRG and its affiliates’ sales and use tax compliance obligations and other duties as assigned. Review of capital expenditure and consumable invoices to determine taxability and ensure proper accruals are maintained. Prepare monthly and quarterly account reconciliations. Validate and maintain sales tax exemption certificates. Support the Tax Manager in tax audit defense and timely respond to and resolve correspondence and notices from tax authorities. Provide other tax support as needed and/or assigned.
Review of capital asset and consumable expense (products and services) invoices to determine appropriate taxability. Ensure the proper tax amount is charged or set-up the appropriate accrual. Develop taxability matrices for internal use.
Efficiently, timely and accurately review sales and use tax exemption certificates and update customer accounts, when applicable.
Support the audit defense of NRG and its affiliates’ sales and use tax positions. Pull invoices and other documentation required to respond to audit requests and defend positions. Timely resolution of correspondence and notices from tax authorities.
Perform assigned research using CCH or other on-line tax software, internet and other research tools. Prepare memorandum, matrices and other correspondence summarizing research and reaching applicable conclusions.
Work with other tax team members to ensure departmental deadlines are met and objectives are achieved. Other tax issues as assigned.
Proactively maintain sales and use tax knowledge and professional development.
Other tax compliance and responsibilities as assigned or necessary. Overtime and weekends may be required depending upon department needs. Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Open office environment. Overtime and weekends may be required as special projects arise.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference for Accounting or Finance degree. CPA a plus and research and tax provision experience preferred.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) with all levels of internal and external customers. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member; ability to set priorities and to respond to changing demands from multiple sources. Ability to manipulate word processing and spreadsheet computer software (Windows based Word and Excel); demonstrated work paper technique. Knowledge of general accounting principles, basic sales/use tax compliance, familiarity with audit support. Industry expertise, experience with gross receipts taxes and unclaimed property a plus. Proven analytical and problem solving skills; demonstrated planning and organizing skills; ability to think strategically/long-term.
