Job Summary
The Senior Insurance Accountant performs activities involved in the maintenance and control of the general ledger in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Statutory Accounting Principles. This position reviews and/or initiates and posts journal entries; monitors posted financial data; prepares financial analyses and reconciliations. Participates in the preparation of regulatory reporting (e.g., annual statements).
Role and Responsibilities
To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and should demonstrate the following competencies to consistently perform the essential functions of this position. The requirements listed below are representative of the fundamental knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the job successfully:
- Responsible for monthly financial close activities including preparation, review, and posting of journal entries.
- Reconcile and analyze assigned balance sheet and income statement accounts.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly variances analyses for management reporting.
- Assist with the preparation of statutory and GAAP Reporting.
- Prepare audit schedules and footnote input.
- Assist in documenting internal processes/controls and developing improvements as appropriate.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- Preferred: Master's in Business Administration.
- At least 5 years of progressive insurance accounting experience.
- Previous accounting experience in an Insurance Company is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP, statutory accounting principles, and Yellowbook reporting.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including nested formulas, PivotTables, VLOOKUP, and Index Match.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently, exercise professional judgment, and interact effectively with various management levels.
- Excellent prioritization and follow-through skills.
Physical Demands
While performing general office duties for this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and/or walk around (including the use of stairs). Other demands include the ability to openly communicate with others by talking, listening, and reading, being able to lift light objects (<25lbs), and using standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and phones. In addition, there is an occasional need to bend, twist or stoop to open/close cabinets, and reach for files or other standard office-type objects.
Work Environment
The office environment is quiet and, in a temperature-controlled setting with random adjustments in noise or temperature due to conversations, unscheduled maintenance repairs to the building or its interior offices, or unpredictable situations due to weather or other acts beyond company control. An employee must be willing to work their regularly assigned work schedule for their duties and/or job responsibilities and in times of need, be able to work an extended schedule depending on the company/department needs, project requirements, or customer demands.
