Job Summary
The Accountant maintains financial records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Through those efforts, this position prepares journal entries, performs reconciliations, and prepares financial statements, as well as acting as a liaison to support schools and other departments. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and is represented by the Anchorage Council of Education bargaining unit.
Job Requirements
The following are required:
- A bachelor's degree with emphasis in accounting, business administration, or a related field. Five years of experience in financial accounting with two years of governmental accounting may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
- Three to five years of experience in accounting or finance.
The following are preferred:
- Prior school business or governmental accounting experience.
- Proficiency in the BusinessPlus financial software system.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintains a complete set of financial records, which includes monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and verification of revenue and expenditure account balances.
- Prepares financial entries, revenue/cost variance analyses, and may assist in preparing financial reports.
- Utilizes and maintains computerized systems such as inventory, bank reconciliation, student nutrition, student activities, etc.
- Maintains proper manual subsidiary ledgers and general ledger accounts for all of ASD’s funds.
- Coordinates with various schools and departments to ensure that proper information is recorded in the accounting system.
- Assists schools and departments with financial matters, including budget and report analysis, interpretation of financial data and systems and procedural training.
- Processes and reconciles payments on contracts, conducts inventory counts, and performs other financial control activities.
- Prepares monthly and quarterly claims for reimbursement and reports as required by various governmental agencies to ensure proper receipt of revenue.
- Prepares, updates, files, and otherwise maintains useful schedules and work papers in support of cost, labor, and materials usage and revenue analyses, as well as financial reports.
- Researches and understands current and proposed regulations, accounting principles, and other statutory requirements.
- Prepares various analyses and reports as directed.
- Completes tasks and assigned projects on time as directed.
- Works with a minimum level of supervision and schedule workload for timely reporting.
- Communicates openly and effectively in a positive manner to support the needs of the department and the Anchorage School District as a whole.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Works accurately and efficiently with attention to detail.
- Travels to ASD schools and administrative sites as needed.
Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings. While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
