This position will be responsible for managing the general ledger close, consolidation, and financial reporting processes of the Markel Ventures segment. This position will also support the Director on evaluating and documenting technical accounting matters and executing on long-term strategic projects in line with the segment’s objectives and priorities. This person will work under general direction from their director.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage the Markel Ventures finance team through a controlled and timely closing of the Oracle Financial Consolidation and Cloud System (FCCS), monthly Oracle ERP sync, and financial statement preparation.
- Supervise the monthly process for loading Markel Ventures affiliate trial balances into the FCCS consolidation and reporting applications.
- Review and distribute internal financials summarizing results of the Markel Ventures affiliates to Markel Ventures executives.
- Ensure timely and accurate journal entry postings for Markel Ventures holding company and purchase accounting adjustments with appropriate signoff and support to ensure integrity of accounting records.
- Prepare affiliate commentary and present financial results to management and senior leadership, including researching and analyzing financial data to communicate key drivers impacting the account balance fluctuations.
- Review and oversee preparation of 10-Q/K disclosure schedules and relevant portions of the Markel Group 10-Q/K for completeness and accuracy.
- Assist in maintaining the SOX documentation and remediation of control issues for the Markel Ventures holding company.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for affiliate accounting associates to ensure monthly affiliate financials and other monthly, quarterly, and annual deliverables are prepared appropriately for consolidation and reporting.
- Create reports with appropriate financial information needed to properly respond to ad hoc requests from management and senior leadership of Markel Ventures and Markel Group.
- Collaborate with teammates to continually assess processes and initiate ideas with management to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency, effectiveness, and consistency amongst MV operations.
- Participate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise.
- Participate in researching and analyzing technical accounting issues including, but not limited to, goodwill impairment testing, intangible asset impairment review, purchase accounting for acquisitions, implementation of new accounting standards, and consolidation under ASC 810.
- Lead, recruit, supervise, develop, mentor and provide performance feedback to direct reports for the purpose of achieving functional goals and objectives.
- Work closely with other functional areas, including MV management, to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals.
- Prepare and maintain schedules used to track activity related to equity method investments.
Education and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensing required.
Work Experience
- 7+ years of experience in accounting, audit, or finance.
- 2+ years of managing an accounting close process.
Skill Sets
- Strong computer skills including a high degree of proficiency within Excel.
- Experience with Oracle applications, including producing ad hoc queries, preferred.
- High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change in a fast-paced environment.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work successfully both in teams and independently.
