Job Summary
IPAC at the California Institute of Technology is soliciting applications for an Assistant Scientific Analyst to work on the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS) program. GOALS is a multi-wavelength survey of the brightest 200 Luminous Infrared Galaxies in the sky, using telescopes on the ground and in space. The GOALS team was recently awarded a large, cycle-2 program with the James Webb Space Telescope to study the atomic and molecular gas and the dust in and around the nuclei of 15 of the most powerful LIRGs in the local Universe at unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution in the infrared. The successful applicant will lead the reduction and analyses of these JWST data, together with the GOALS team. This is a term appointment.
Essential Job Duties
As an Assistant Scientific Analyst at IPAC and a member of the GOALS team, your duties will include:
- Reduction, calibration, and analysis of JWST imaging and spectroscopic data.
- Comparison of JWST GOALS data to other relevant ancillary data.
- Presentation of results at scientific meetings and conferences.
- Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Preparation and submission of proposals for ground and space-based telescopes to further GOALS research.
- Participation in all GOALS meetings and collaboration with the GOALS team at IPAC and other institutions.
Basic Qualifications- PhD in astronomy or a related discipline and at least two years of post-PhD experience.
- Good communication skills and experience working in a team of dedicated scientists at a wide variety of educational and professional levels.
- Ability to write observing proposals and scientific papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred QualificationsBesides these basic qualifications, there are additional skills that will be important for contributing to the GOALS program, namely:
- Experience in the reduction and analysis of JWST imaging and/or spectroscopic data.
- Experience analyzing multi-wavelength, infrared, sub-millimeter, and optical data probing star formation in nearby galaxies.
