The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is excited to offer a career growth opportunity to a motivated and talented individual for the Accountant I position to function in the Northeast Residential Services Office located in Danvers, MA. This Accountant I is expected to effectively represent the Northeast Region by building respectful and collaborative partnerships with individuals, families, guardians, provider agencies and other stakeholder groups involved in the work of the Region and the Department.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Reconciles statements for each individual account DDS/ NRS is representative payee for.
- Confers with banks by telephone, in writing or in person to resolve accounting discrepancies and obtain statements.
- Keeps detailed files (electronic and original hard copy) of all the individuals of NRS monthly financial transactions and Bank Statements.
- Complete audit of Financial Transaction Records of individuals that reside at NRS, for appropriateness of purchases following Money Management guidelines; verify accuracy monthly for selected homes.
- Provide training to staff as needed and coordinate required training sessions.
- Provides technical assistance to employees, individual residents, state agencies and the general public to ensure compliance with agency laws, rules and regulations.
- Assist House Managers and Residential Services Directors as needed to appropriately support individuals served by NRS agency.
- Reports any and all discrepancies to the Director of NRS, Assistant Director of Quality Assurance and Assistant Director of Operations as well as potentially the Bureau of Program Integrity and other reporting agencies like DPPC if needed.
Preferred Qualifications at hire:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting including terminology.
- Knowledge of the methods of general report writing.
- Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of accounting data to draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as financial reports, accounts and ledgers.
- Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, etc., governing assigned unit activities.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations using formulas to solve accounting problems.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to gather information by examining records and documents and through questioning individuals.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to prepare general and financial reports.
- Ability to write concisely, to express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in logical sequence.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.

- Must have reliable transportation and the ability to travel to different work sites during the work day.

Days Off: Saturday/Sunday

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, or (B) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in accounting or auditing, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required (A) experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
- An Associate's or higher degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for the required (A) experience.
- Successfully completed education in accounting or business administration in a recognized business school or school of accounting may be substituted for the required (A) experience on the basis of one year of such education above the high school level for six months of the required (A) experience.
NOTE: No substitution will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
