Position Overview
The Senior Accounting Analyst position is responsible for certain internal (monthly) and external (quarterly) corporate reporting duties. This position will be assigned specific tasks during each reporting cycle with a goal of exposing individual contributors to all corporate reporting workstreams and deliverables over time. The position interfaces with business representatives at all levels, and in all jurisdictions and business segments, to provide expertise and assistance for accurate and timely reporting.
This position will work to ensure that GAAP and SEC reporting requirements are met, including the effective implementation of new SEC rules. Continuous improvement remains an area of focus. This position will be expected to identify and implement process improvements to produce efficiencies and high-quality reporting deliverables at all stages of the reporting process. This position works closely with internal teams within the Controller’s department as well as Investor Relations, Financial Planning & Analysis, Rates & Regulatory, Legal, Human Resources, Environmental, ESG & Sustainability, Treasury and Tax regarding various reporting and disclosure items. The senior analyst also works with internal and external auditors, providing necessary information and answering questions.
Responsibilities
The Senior Analyst works closely with teammates and managers on various accounting/reporting activities that include:
- Preparation of monthly internal reports such as financial results for senior management and the Board of Directors.
- Calculations of earnings per share; preparation of quarterly external financial reports and associated financial statements and footnote disclosures including the Form 10-Q/K.
- Preparation of quarterly earnings release financial information.
- Review of data request information submitted by business or accounting teams; and other analyses and special projects, including assisting with monthly close and consolidations as needed.
- Handle moderately complex reporting issues, there may be occasional research and documentation of significant accounting issues/conclusions.
Required/Basic Qualifications
Senior Accounting Analyst
- Bachelor’s degree with major in Accounting/Finance or related discipline.
- Three (3) plus years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree.
- Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft, HFM, PowerPlan, etc.) and query tool (WebI).
- Experience using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Accounting Analyst II
- Bachelor’s degree with major in Accounting/Finance or related discipline.
- Two (2) plus years of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree.
- Possesses and applies fundamental accounting and finance concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Experience with financial applications (i.e., PeopleSoft, HFM, PowerPlan, etc.) and query tool (WebI).
- Experience using Microsoft products such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Desired Qualifications
- CPA or working toward CPA.
- Advanced degree, preferably in Accounting.
- Six (6) years or more of professional work related experience.
- Experience with financial reporting (SEC/GAAP/FERC).
- Previous experience in utility or regulatory accounting environment.
- Effective written and oral communication and collaboration skills.
- Advanced analytical and critical thinking skills, including data analytics.
- Knowledge of SEC rules and regulations, including interactive data (XBRL) requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively perform at the experienced analyst level, including ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, demonstrate effective project management, and adhere to strict deadlines and schedules.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, display flexibility with assignments, timely responsiveness and foster good relationships with teammates and business partners.
- Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to efficiently multi-task within tight deadlines.
- Experience with financial systems: Wdesk, OneStream, Advanced Microsoft Office products skills (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Public accounting or auditing experience.
- Willingness to provide and respond to feedback.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to exercise judgment.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to the assigned Duke Energy facility.
- Some overtime will be required during quarterly peak reporting periods and the preparation of related SEC filings.
- Occasional travel.
