The Staff Accountant will play a critical role within the investment team and will be responsible for the completeness and accuracy of the data within our investment accounting software tool, Clearwater, along with the recording of investment transactions in the general ledger on a GAAP and statutory basis for four standalone insurance companies and reporting on the consolidated investment portfolio on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. This person will review transactions within Clearwater in comparison to our custodian records and asset manager’s trade activity and ensure alignment amongst these various data points. Strong collaboration and communication amongst the various parties is key to the investments process.
Key Accountabilities/Deliverables:
- Monitor daily investment activity within the investment accounting tool, Clearwater
- Prepare monthly investment reconciliations, including custodian, Clearwater and Workday reconciliations
- Prepare and post monthly investment journal entries on a GAAP and statutory basis for four insurance companies
- Prepare monthly pricing and fair value levelling review for all securities
- Prepare monthly investment expense accruals
- Prepare daily summary of investment activity
- Prepare weekly investment report
- Prepare monthly investment report
- Prepare various adhoc analysis of the investment portfolio for management as requested
- Assist in the monitoring of actual investment expenses to planned expenses
- Assist in the maintenance of other invested assets schedule and related reporting
- Assist in the integration of Clearwater and Workday
- Assist in the quarterly preparation of the investment material for the Finance Committee, Risk Committee and Board of Directors
- Prepare quarterly and annual GAAP reporting of investments within the consolidated financial statement, investor supplement and any future reports utilized by management
- Prepare quarterly and annual STAT reporting of investments within the yellow books, statutory financial statements, and various statutory exhibits
- Prepare various compliance reporting of investment holdings for state insurance departments
- Prepare investment data for AM Best reporting
- Assist in the coordination amongst various banks and state insurance departments for necessary investment transactions and account maintenance
- Support internal and external audit requests related to the investments area
- Maintain procedural documentation for assigned responsibilities
Technical Knowledge and Understanding:
- Advanced Excel/spreadsheet skills including pivot tables and complex formulas
- Must have good working knowledge of US GAAP accounting
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, CPA eligible preferred
- 0 to 3 years accounting experience, preferably in insurance industry
- Familiarity with US GAAP reporting
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with General Ledger Accounting System preferred
