GENERAL DESCRIPTION:The Asbestos Program Coordinator position represents the Air Quality Division regarding asbestos by providing information, education and interpretation of the regulatory requirements to building owners, contractors and the public, as well as enforces asbestos regulations throughout the state. This position follows projects from the time of notification through enforcement activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Performs site visits and determines regulatory compliance
- Attends most enforcement meetings for asbestos violations
- Receives and reviews technical asbestos documents
- Makes determinations regarding asbestos inspections for remediation/renovation projects
- Conducts training and performs outreach activities
- Provides presentation of 4-hour Asbestos Rules & Interpretations course
- Visits municipal planning to address questions and provide educational material
- Deals with the public, owners and operators regarding questions about asbestos regulations
- Manages data entry and filing of asbestos documents
PREFERENCES:Bachelor’s Degree required with a preference in engineering or environmental/physical sciences plus 1-2 years of progressive work experience in the same.
KNOWLEDGE:- Knowledge of federal regulations for asbestos
- Ability to interact with the public and the regulated community in a professional manner
- Ability to reason through complex problems
- Ability to remain calm during conflict
- High level of skill in written, spoken, and electronic communication
- Knowledge of spreadsheet and database use
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Bachelor's (typically in The Sciences)
Experience:0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist
OREducation & Experience Substitution:4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:- Requires extensive travel at times.
- May be required to wear respirators, protective clothing, and 4-gas type monitors based on site conditions.
- Inspections may occur in facilities with uneven ground or abandoned locations.
- May require the use of open ladders and work in confined areas.
