Natural Catastrophe ("Nat Cat") Specialist / Flood - Hybrid
About the Role
As a member of the catastrophe perils ("Cat Perils") team, you will join our efforts to develop innovative models used for quantifying physical and economic impacts of natural catastrophes. You will collaborate with internal partners and external organizations and craft solutions to reduce negative consequences of catastrophes. You will have opportunities to transition into a wide range of technical and non-technical roles and advance your career in the financial industry.
In your role as a Natural Catastrophe ("Nat Cat") Specialist with expertise related to Flood, you will:
- Develop and improve models for assessment of risk associated with hydrometeorological hazards (including inland flooding, storm surge, heavy rainfall, drought, and other associated perils)
- Acquire and analyze data to quantify the physical and monetary impacts of flood hazards on buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.
- Leverage novel technologies such as remote sensing and machine learning to evaluate exposure to natural hazards.
About the Team
The catastrophe perils ("Cat Perils") department is responsible for the development and advancement of Swiss Re’s global natural catastrophe risk assessment framework, models, and tools. The team consists of approximately 50 dedicated engineers and scientists in multi-faceted technical fields. We rely on our proprietary Nat. Cat. modeling technology to bring the latest science and engineering as well as our unique underwriting experience and expertise to grow Swiss Re's edge in Nat. Cat. re/insurance. We create value for Swiss Re by driving confident Nat Cat decisions, in close collaboration with peers in underwriting and other functions.
About You
In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of Swiss Re's natural catastrophe modelling landscape. A successful candidate should have a desire to use problem-solving skills in applying sound scientific methods to solve unique and challenging problems in the fields of climate, atmospheric and weather-related perils. It is expected that candidates will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, able to perform high-quality self-directed research, have outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and be team-oriented.
Requirements:
- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in natural sciences; engineering or a related technical field. Experience in state-of-the-art applied research in hydrology, meteorology, or inland or coastal flood risk is a plus.
- Industry or academic experience in flood/climate/natural catastrophe modelling. Modelling experience in a re/insurance context is a plus.
- Strong analytical and programming skills (e.g., Python, Matlab), record in successfully developing data analysis applications; experience with statistics and machine learning is a plus.
Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office two to three days per week on average. This role is eligible for both: location assistance and visa sponsorship, for candidates who are in the USA.
For Armonk, NY, the estimated base salary range for this position is $112,000 to $180,000. The specific salary offered for this, or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
