JOB SUMMARY
The role involves conducting comprehensive accounting analysis for contracts, acquisitions, special projects, and other strategic initiatives, ensuring compliance with GAAP. The candidate will play a crucial role in the due diligence process of potential acquisitions, identifying accounting risks and opportunities to aid in strategic decisions. Additionally, the position requires engagement in research on complex accounting issues, leading to well-substantiated conclusions and facilitating collaboration across various departments to ensure accurate accounting treatments. The role also includes responsibilities such as refining financial models, reviewing contracts for GAAP compliance, assisting with quarterly reporting, and staying updated with new accounting standards from FASB and SEC. This is a hybrid position with 2-3 days in the office a week within the Southern Power Comptroller's organization and is located in Atlanta, Georgia.
Responsibilities
- Conduct in-depth financial and accounting analysis related to potential acquisitions, special projects, and other strategic business initiatives, ensuring adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Provide critical accounting expertise during the due diligence stages of potential deals, pinpointing risks, and uncovering opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.
- Engage in research on complex technical accounting issues, developing well-reasoned accounting conclusions, and formally documenting the company's conclusion.
- Facilitate effective collaboration and communication with cross-functional teams, such as operations, legal, tax, and finance, to assess and communicate accounting treatment on business transactions.
- Review and refine Excel-based financial models for accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with accounting guidance.
- Conduct thorough reviews of contracts to determine and communicate appropriate accounting in compliance with GAAP.
- Assist with the quarterly internal and external reporting for the company, contributing to ensuring the accuracy of the financial statements and related disclosures.
- Review and evaluate all new pronouncements, standards, interpretations, and directives issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), to determine the impact to the company.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Experience & Education:
- BS or BA in Accounting is required
- CPA and an advanced degree are preferred
- 4-5 years of demonstrated experience in technical accounting research, financial analysis, and strategic transaction support.
- Strong Excel experience is preferred
- Experience with a public accounting firm is desirable
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Ability to research and understand accounting transactions and provide sound guidance
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Knowledge and ability to apply GAAP and SEC rules and reporting requirements
- Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Committee of Sponsoring Organization framework
- Working knowledge of accounting research tools a plus
- Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- Ability to communicate accounting applications and analysis to non-financial personnel
- Exhibit strong initiative and require minimal supervision
- Must handle confidential and sensitive information
