Summary
As a Financial Senior Analyst/Consultant in the Strategic Financial Analytics team, you will act as an internal management consultant on officer-level projects by building advanced finance and economic model analyses, conducting strategic qualitative assessments, and delivering presentations and recommendations directly to senior executive stakeholders. You will focus primarily on special projects intended to change or challenge current thinking across all of our lines of business, so you will be expected to have a proven track record in project scoping and management, strategic problem solving, data modeling, politically savvy communications, and providing expert advice to senior management.
Your analytic responsibilities will include researching issues, obtaining necessary information from a range of company data systems, conducting sensitivity and scenario runs, testing ideas with leadership stakeholders, facilitating group discussion, and creating high quality deliverables. The ideal candidate will possess not only strong analytical skills, but also expert communication abilities, and a proven track record in project management and teamwork.
Minimum Requirements
Strategic Financial Analyst Senior
- Bachelors degree in business, finance, accounting economics, mathematics or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
- PLUS minimum five (5) years directly related experience in financial analysis, accounting, economic analysis or data analytics in any industry, OR minimum five (5) years business operations related experience in the utility or energy services industry.
- In lieu of degree, an equivalent combination of formal education and experience totally ten (10) years is required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of finance and economic analysis, corporate finance, utility regulation, utility operations. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Strong research, data management and effective management communication skills.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.) and database tools.
Strategic Financial Consultant
- Bachelors' degree in finance, accounting economics, mathematics or related field AND seven (7) years' experience in financial analysis or in a financial, data analytics, or business operations related position in the utility or energy services industry.
- Advanced knowledge of finance and economic analysis, business operations, or business planning. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Strong research, data management and effective communication skills.
- Strong research, strong ability to mine and manage large sources of data and excellent executive management written and verbal communication skills a must.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.) and database tools.
Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:
- MBA or Master's degree preferred.
- Advanced experience with related analytical, financial, database, and/or business operations tools (i.e. Cognos, PowerPlant, Hyperion, Maximo, supply chain and inventory systems).
- Travel may be required.
Major Accountabilities
1. Function as an internal management consultant by building advanced finance and economic models and delivering presentations with decision-worthy recommendations to executive leadership.
2. May act as the process owner for the enterprise-wide budget preparation, variance analysis, and short and long-term forecasting for the enterprise.
3. Design and develop business unit financial and operational report packages. Undertakes complex financial and operational decision support and business unit planning projects.
4. Consult with business units in the utilization and prioritization of O&M or Capital budgets, current work plans and long-range forecasts typically involving high impact business issues. Ensure financial events and transactions are reported to Accounting for proper financial statement recording and accounting treatment.
5. Compile relevant data, perform variance analyses on an enterprise-wide basis, update business operations models and reports supporting the execution of business planning and initiative tracking, gap analysis, metrics development, tracking and benchmarking, and portfolio management.
6. Collaborate with department staff and business units in the evaluation of operational and financial business scenarios by utilization of corporate financial and business operations models. Develop ad hoc models to support unique scenarios or limited scope analysis with the various work streams O&M, Capital, or Business Planning. Provide direction or support in the formulation of model inputs and processing of data through financial and operations models.
7. Consult with department leadership and business management in identifying, recommending, and developing tactical and strategic business case opportunities.
8. Review and ensure that initiatives to be included in the business plans are strategically aligned with benchmarking, budgeting and business planning processes.
9. Review and ensure that documentation to support initiative implementation is accurate and complete.
10. Provide recommendations to ensure effective implementation.
11. Provide direction and participate in design, development, compilation, presentation and communication of performance report packages for management reporting including identification of significant findings and conclusions through the use of existing technology and strong understanding of business unit financial and operations related data. Ensure financial and operational report packages and communications deliver impactful and relevant messages.
12. May complete and submit of required external reporting and filings including ACC discovery requests.
13. Maintain advanced knowledge and understanding of all department workstreams - capital, O&M, and business planning processes.
14. Drive continuous improvement/process improvement through organization, business customer organizations and incorporate principles and practices into business unit partnerships.
15. Provide training and support to business customers to ensure understanding of new or existing processes; develops and provides comprehensive training to others within department.
16. Provide guidance and support to other team members to enhance development and productivity. Serves as subject matter expert within team as well as across the department and mentors other junior team members.

Flex Role:
This position is not required to be performed at a specific APS facility as long as adequate technology and a solid ergonomic set up are present. Pending agreement with leadership, employees hired into this role will be able to choose where they prefer to perform their work, but the ultimate decision is the company's. Employees will have two options to choose from:
- APS office based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from an APS facility.
- Home based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from his/her home.
- Employees in Flex roles are required to reside in Arizona (or NM for Four Corners-based employees). Role types are subject to change based on business need.
