Job Description
The Department of Cell Biology has an outstanding opportunity for a laboratory technician focused on cell biology, optogenetics, and optical recording. This position has the potential to become a strong foundational research experience that can lead to success in graduate school OR become a long-term position with the possibility for advancement.
About the Gong Lab: The Neurotoolbox Lab conducts NIH and NSF-funded research to develop tools that help understand the brain. The lab records or controls neural activity by creating and engineering protein tools, microscopes, and machine learning-based analysis techniques. These tools can access hundreds to thousands of neurons simultaneously to discover neural circuit function. We seek passionate scientists or scientists-in-training to add to the scientific and personal diversity of the lab. Join us to contribute to our exciting journey in understanding the brain!
Duties:
- Performs biological, chemical, or physical tests and supports scientific investigators in research projects.
- Performs routine tests and analyses in a laboratory using technical equipment and instruments.
- Performs animal procedures such as breeding, weaning, and various surgeries.
- Operates laboratory equipment, to include but not limited to microscopes, centrifuges, titrators, pipetting machines, and pH meters.
- Performs diagnostic laboratory control tests and instrument calibrations prior to performing lab tests according to standardized procedures.
- Inspects and makes minor repairs to laboratory equipment as needed.
- Plans, sets up, and undertakes controlled experiments and trials.
- Records, compiles, enters, calculates, and analyzes data or results using existing computer code.
- Develops new code as needed with mentoring from the supervisor.
- Reports results to the supervisor in a professional/scientific manner.
- Performs various administrative duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the lab, such as but not limited to, assessing lab needs, ordering supplies/equipment, scheduling lab usage, and performing lab budgeting.
Job Requirements
Required Education: High School Diploma.
Preferred: Associate's Degree in a Biological or Physical Science.
Skills:
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
- Knowledge of the proper handling of chemicals and biohazardous materials.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations in different units of measurement.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite or other relevant programs.
- Detail oriented and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
Advertised Physical Requirements:
- Physical: Standing for prolonged periods. Manual dexterity, walking, and talking. Ability to move or lift up to 20 pounds.
- Environmental: Laboratory Environment. May be exposed to biohazardous materials, blood borne pathogens, or chemicals.
Departmental Preferences:
- Although no prior experience is necessary, applications to this position will be strengthened by prior experience in any of the following:
- PCR-based cloning and recombination.
- Optical recording using a laboratory microscope.
- Animal handling and surgery.
- Basic programming in Matlab or Python.
