Job Summary: The APC in the Division of General Surgery provides care to patients primarily at South Jordan Health Center, Main Campus, Redwood Rd Clinic, and occasionally at Farmington Health Center. The NP or PA will provide outpatient evaluation (pre-op and post-op) and rotating call coverage on nights and weekends. This is a busy surgical practice, with a growing abdominal wall reconstruction service. The expectation for the PA or NP to become comfortable with office-based minor procedures and possibly assist in the OR on occasion including Robotic cases.
The group consists of 3 community surgeons. The APC will have graduated responsibilities for patient assessment and minor procedures, starting with supervision by attending surgeons. The APC will be expected to progress to independent evaluation and development of treatment plans, as well as independent performance of defined office-based minor surgical procedures. The common problems that the APC can be expected to manage independently include the evaluation of: abdominal pain, hernia, benign ano-rectal conditions, skin and subcutaneous lesions, and lower extremity venous insufficiency. Common office procedures include wound care, excision of benign skin and subcutaneous lesions, image-guided aspirations, removal of implanted vascular access devices, band ligation of hemorrhoids, and sclerotherapy of varicose veins.
Responsibilities:
- Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
- Performs physical examinations.
- Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.
- Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
- Reaches tentative diagnosis of medical, surgical and other conditions.
- Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management.
- Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.
- Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
- Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.
- Participates in special projects and committee functions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah.
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in ACLS / BLS / NRP / ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
