The Opportunity
This senior level lab position will be expected to work both independently and in conjunction with their Manager/Director and other Food Technologists on the development of powdered applications along with the possibility of working on ready-to-eat, ready-to-drink, and tablet & capsule products from concept through execution. This role requires a proactive approach, underpinned by positive intent and a solution-oriented mindset. Successful applicants must have an extensive track record of developing and executing new concepts through to market/launch, and the candidate must demonstrate knowledge and a proven formulation history in powdered beverages. The ability to juggle multiple projects and apply critical thinking, organizational, communication, and analytical skills is essential. This permanent position will report to the R&D Manager.
Note: This is a lab position where all food allergens (milk, soy, nuts, peanuts, wheat, egg, etc…) are present. This person will be involved in tasting a variety of product types and subsequently exposed to them.
- Formulate and develop foods and supplements including: ready-to-eat items, powders, tablets & capsules, and ready-to-drink. Includes: formulation, validating ingredient and ingredient vendors, preliminary costing and preparing nutritional and supplement facts panels.
- Create and flavor prototypes, organizes subsequent sensory panels refining formulations until desired characteristics are achieved.
- Manages and executes pilot plant experiments and scale-up manufacturing runs, initiates analytical testing for raw materials and trials, and inputs specifications and formulas into product development software.
- Engages in reformulation to comply with evolving government regulations or customer demands, while also overseeing the monitoring of product stability.
- Engage in self-development activities to enhance technical and leadership skills. Embrace change and challenges with a positive mindset, ensuring the continuous improvement of processes and products.
- Documents all formulations, variables tested, product stability, and other pertinent details and enters into lab notebooks and Formula Management System.
- Produces formula cost information; works with purchasing, finance, and sales teams to help establish final product pricing; initiates new item documents and set-up for all product introductions.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to foster an environment of honesty and integrity. Demonstrate adaptability in brainstorming and troubleshooting sessions, contributing to a culture of solution-focused problem solving.
- Works with Regulatory to generate and align on compliant Supplement/Nutrition facts panels and ingredient listings for product packaging/artwork.
- Provides leadership in a team environment.
- Identifies & overcomes barriers to successful innovation by developing strong interdepartmental relationships with customer, manufacturing, supply chain, accounting, quality, and purchasing teams.
- Understands customer needs, business needs, and business strategy.
- Works with key suppliers and purchasing team to keep abreast of upcoming trends, novel ingredients, and new application ideas.
- Considered a key knowledgeable resource for others in the company.

The Skills you will bring to the team
- Degree and equivalent experience: Bachelor's of Science degree in Food Science, or related field and equivalent experience.
- Years of experience: Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience working in the food, beverage, or dietary supplement industry; prior development and knowledge of dietary supplements is an advantage.
- CAPM or PMP Certification is a plus.
- Advanced knowledge in more than one of the aforementioned formats (Ready-To-Eat, Ready-To-Drink, etc…) is a must.
- Knowledge and application of flavor systems is essential.
- Understands daily lab processes and production processes.
- Extensive raw material and stability knowledge is essential.
- Proven track record of developing new concepts and bringing products to market.
- SAP experience preferred.
- Provides individuals accurate information so they can make accurate decisions. Is timely with information.
- Can present to more Senior Management without undue tension/nervousness.
- Will stand up and be counted. Willing to be the only champion for idea/position.
- Can negotiate skillfully in tough situations with both internal and external groups.
- Good at figuring out processes necessary to get things done.
- Clearly and comfortably delegates both routine and important tasks and decisions.
