Summary:
The Nursing Director has fiscal and operational responsibility and accountability for standards of care and service within specified clinical areas/units. He/she provides leadership for improving patient care, planning, staff performance, systems improvements, and teaching. Works with the Medical Director to develop and evaluate standards of care and practice for identified patient populations. The Nursing Director participates in the setting and implementation of the organization's goals, priorities, and strategies and works with other disciplines and groups to provide the highest quality of care across the system. The Nursing Director is responsible for the development of staff within their department.
Responsibilities:
- Effectively manages Nursing personnel.
- Recruits, interviews and selects staff based on established recruitment processes.
- Provides leadership and direction in implementation of organizational strategic goals and objectives.
- Develops implements and evaluates unit policies, procedures and goals, which are consistent with department and organizational goals.
- Completes regular performance evaluations for each staff member, conducts evaluations for new staff members prior to completion of probationary period.
- Demonstrates effective conflict resolution skills.
- Develops implements and evaluates unit-staffing plans to meet the patient’s needs.
- Successfully directs the operations of the Nursing Unit.
- Develops in collaboration with support services a plan to ensure a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
- Develops, justifies and maintains a fiscal plan (budget).
- Monitors patient revenues, expenses and operating expenses (capital expense items, salaries) and provides reports to finance department as directed.
- Assures that the Nursing facilities and equipment meet necessary standards and monitors utilization of equipment.
- Creates an environment that fosters open communication and assures decision making at the point of service.
- Plans and conducts departmental staff meetings as needed.
- Accountable and responsible for continuous quality and regulatory management directives including CMS, AOA, OSHA, etc.
- Responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Department’s Quality Improvement efforts from both the customer and the system approach.
- Provides environment for effective patient care.
- Provides input and standards in formulating patient care policies and procedures for the Nursing Department and the organization; works with the medical Staff to coordinate Medical and Nursing management of patient care.
- Assures quality and appropriateness of patient care.
- Facilitates and monitors activities related to patient care and sets standards for accurate reporting and recording of nursing procedures.
- Evaluates the delivery of nursing services through assessment, planning, intervention, re-evaluation, written documentation, observation and comparison to established standards.
- Communicates with patients, significant others and health care professionals regarding care to the patient.
- Supports education and staff development.
- Provides for professional growth and development of nursing staff and establishes climate conducive to meeting educational needs and efforts of the Nursing Department.
- Cooperates with clinical instructors in planning, implementing and evaluation of students’ clinical experience.
- Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs; attends meetings, workshops and conventions to enrich personal knowledge, growth and skill in providing age clinical care for patients.
- Participates in committees in patient care, hospital and system wide or professional organizations.
- Models Northern Light Health values and Standards of Behavior in the performance of work duties.
- Works closely with the other nursing directors to ensure coverage as well as affect the implementation of administrative decisions.
- Complies with Hospital Hand Hygiene Standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
