STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: To provide support for the mission and vision of the hospital through your actions, attitudes, and personal conduct as a team member of your department, an employee of the hospital, and a contributor to the health and wellbeing of the patients we service; to provide the duties outlined in this job description to the best of your abilities; and to strive for excellent service to your customers.
JOB SUMMARY: Provide direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting under supervision of a registered nurse. Effectively communicate changes in patient status, symptoms, and results of diagnostic tests to appropriate individuals. Respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response of treatments of patients.
GENERAL DUTIES:
- Support your manager and administration in the implementation of the hospital’s mission, vision, and overall goals.
- Actively participate as a member of your department by providing excellent customer service, identifying areas for improvement and implementing operational changes.
- Assist your department in providing efficient and effective patient care by actively participating in the orientation process, your department meetings, available educational events, personal performance evaluations and focused counseling opportunities.
- Promote high standards of performance by exhibiting compassion and professionalism at all times and by being responsible for your actions, attitude, and body language.
- Communicate in a timely and effective manner using multiple communication mediums. This includes notes, e-mails, phone calls, one-on-one interaction, and participation in meetings.
- Support performance improvement monitoring by collecting data, reporting incidents, identifying patient care problems and providing performance information to your manager.
- Assist your manager in meeting departmental budget goals, identifying capital equipment needs, and developing new strategic goals for the department.
- Follow all departmental and hospital policies. Request clarification and guidance if needed.
- Keep track of equipment and supplies to make sure your department retains the tools needed to provide patient care and to assure departmental resources are used wisely.
- Manage your time to assure you clock in and out as scheduled, complete your assignments within the scheduled timeframe, and minimize changes in the departmental work schedule.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, and consults RN, MD, and FNP as needed; notifies appropriate staff of changes in the patient’s condition.
- Monitors patient’s vital signs; demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring and identifies arrhythmias.
- Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation.
- Treats patients, visitors, and staff with courtesy and respect.
- Prepares and reviews discharge instructions with patients and families.
- Starts IV’s; hangs, monitors, and discontinues IV fluids when ordered.
- Ensures adequate stock of supplies and properly functioning equipment; keeps work areas clean and neat.
- Willingly assists other departments with tasks when asked.
- Assists staff and physicians with procedures.
- Stays within appropriate scope of practice when administering medications per LPN Illinois Laws.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Required to maintain a current Licensed Practical Nurse license in Illinois.
- Required to maintain a current certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS, and CPI. If not certified on hire, ACLS, PALS, and CPI are required within 6 months of hire.
- Required to have IV certification or on job training.
- Required to participate in annual Infection Prevention education.
- Required to follow Infection Prevention guidelines (i.e., proper use of isolation precautions, proper use of PPE, etc.)
- Required to follow all Employee Health protocols (i.e., annual TB skin test, annual flu vaccine, annual employee physical for benefits, etc.)
- Required to attend all mandatory in services including departmental meetings.
- Required to be a role model and support person for LPN’s and CNA’s.
- Required to participate in monthly PI.
- Required to have basic computer knowledge.
- Required to have the ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally.
- Required to pass pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens.
- Required to complete annual education courses.
- Required to complete annual restraint education.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
- Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
- Completes in services and returns in a timely fashion.
- Attends annual review and department in services, as scheduled.
- Attends at least 10 staff meetings annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
