Job Summary: This position is responsible for providing both primary and specialty medical services. This position may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.
Responsibilities:
- Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
- Performs physical examinations.
- Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.
- Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
- Reaches tentative diagnosis of medical, surgical and other conditions.
- Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management.
- Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.
- Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
- Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.
- Participates in special projects and committee functions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Required:
- Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah.
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred:
- Certification in ACLS / BLS / NRP / ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.

Preferences:
The Division of General Internal Medicine of the University of Utah’s School of Medicine is looking for passionate candidates who are interested in caring for patients with serious illness to enter an Advance Practice Clinician Palliative Care and Hospice Fellowship. The fellowship is a one-year opportunity for comprehensive training at the provider level in palliative care and hospice. The fellowship will broaden and strengthen knowledge and will help develop an analytical and systematic approach in diagnosing and caring for adults with serious illness.
The fellow will rotate with the inpatient palliative care teams at the University Hospital and the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, experience hospice and palliative care in rural areas, hospice care, home-based palliative care, with an emphasis on mental and behavioral health training. Our goal is to build confident providers, with effective communication skills, capable of advancing to take on full responsibility and autonomy in patient care.
To apply, every applicant will include supporting evidence of successful completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. Certification and licensure to practice and prescribe (with active DEA license or DEA application) must also be provided. Acceptance to the fellowship will be granted based on CV, three letters of recommendation, a personal interview, and criminal background check.
The program offers a competitive stipend with full benefits. The fellow will also attend the Annual Assembly, the Palliative Care & Hospice Symposium, and Utah Certificate of Palliative Education (UCoPE). The fellow will attend didactic lectures with the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Physician Fellows. The fellowship will start in July.
