A Brief Overview
Facilitates movement of patients to appropriate and alternate levels of care as needed and has the authority to facilitate the opening of transitional beds/unit in order to maximize patient throughput and ease excess capacity. This also includes patient access, transfer center and system wide coordination. Takes physician orders and completes admission assessments and other admission activities in times of unusually high activity. Maximizes patient throughput and access by working with Nursing divisions, Surgical areas and ED to adequately plan for admissions and discharges. Assures adequate staffing in all areas of the hospital and ensures that staffing changes are implemented quickly. Manages fluctuations in patient census utilizing productivity targets, staffing grids and appropriate resources. Promotes Relationship Based Care and models the UH essential behaviors during all interactions with patients, physicians and employees.
What You Will Do- Manages patient flow and manages routine clinical operations through procurement of resources necessary to provide patient care. Works collaboratively with the charge nurse to ensure each area is staffed appropriately.
- Assumes the role of leadership in the absence of Administration during after hours, weekends, and holidays. Also, provides leadership for nursing staff in the absence of the Clinical Managers, Directors, and VP.
- Responsible to lead the daily safety huddle call and partner with the Emergency Department (ED) in the intervals defined in the overcrowding guidelines. Specifically, when in stage yellow, orange and red. May also require rounding in the ED more than once a shift.
- Nursing Supervisor must make critical decisions to staff appropriately, including movement of RN’s, Sitters, CTA’s, etc as necessary.
- With Emergency room surges, the Nursing Supervisor will assess from the ED where the need is and work in the department to assist with flow, etc.
- Responsible for ensuring adequate staffing and manages sitter and restraint utilization.
- Insuring provision of care, restraint utilization, safety and regulatory standards.
- Responsible for administering a rapid response and ensuring all protocols are followed to assist where the need is urgent. Nursing supervisor will also be responsible for responding to BAT, Traumas in the ED, and all codes (blue, , violent and assist where necessary).
- Provides administrative, operational and clinical support to patient care areas and administration.
- Improves systems that support patient care.
- Responsible for maintaining the environment of care and attending to the needs of the clinical staff through visibility / presence in the clinical areas, coaching, and assisting in the completion of patient care activities.
- Responsible for addressing staff concerns, leading through change and helping to create a conducive and positive work environment.
- Serves as the lead for disaster management in the absence of leadership management. Ability to deliver service recovery to patients and family members to ensure a positive experience.

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Education- Associate's Degree (Required) or
- Other Accredited Program (Required) and
- (BSN) Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Preferred) or
- (MSN) Master's Degree in Nursing (Preferred)
Work Experience- 3+ years clinical nursing experience r (Required) and
- Critical care, supervisory or Emergency Department experience strongly (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities- Demonstrated competence as a clinical practitioner. (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrated leadership, management and human relations skills (Required proficiency)
- Proven knowledge of insurance, hospital and professional regulations (Preferred proficiency)
- Excellent interpersonal skills, physician relations experience strongly (Preferred proficiency)
- Extensive troubleshooting, resolution & follow up on high profile issues (Required proficiency)
- Detail oriented with excellent organizational and analytical skills (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office Information technology skills (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications- Registered Nurse (RN), Ohio and/or Multi State Compact License (Required) and
- Basic Life Support (BLS) (Required)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (Required)
