JOB SUMMARY
The College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a Director of Vocal Pedagogy for our voice department. This full-time faculty appointment will commence August of 2024. Final rank to be determined based on applicant’s prior teaching and research experience. All voice types considered.

The College of Music, founded in 1920, is recognized as one of the top comprehensive music schools in the country. The voice department takes pride in its nationally recognized pedagogy program, open studio policy, and faculty collegiality. The voice faculty includes eleven full-time members and supports approximately 30 graduate and 65 undergraduate voice majors. The EklundOpera Program and our Musical Theater program present four fully staged productions and offer a robust pre-professional curriculum. Our nationally recognized CU NOW program focuses on the development of new opera works and provides our students a forum in which to collaborate professionally with the most prominent American opera composers. Our graduates continue to advance the field of vocal music by teaching in both academic and private studio settings, enjoying active performing and directing careers, serving as arts administrators, and leading a variety of entrepreneurial vocal enterprises.
The vocal pedagogy program has a long history as one of the most nationally prominent areas in the College of Music. The program was founded in the late 1950’s by Berton Coffin and offered the first Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Voice in the United States; now it is the DMA in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. In addition to Undergraduate degrees in voice (Arts, Performance, Music Education, Musical Theater), we offer Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Performance and Pedagogy, as well as the Artist Diploma in Voice/Opera. The College also offers comprehensive degree programs in Composition, Conducting, Jazz Studies, Music Education, Musicology, instrumental Performance, and Theory. CU Boulder is located in one of the most picturesque and desirable geographic locations in the country, within easy driving distance of a major metropolitan area and the Rocky Mountains.
WHAT YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BE
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Vocal Pedagogy
- Supervising and mentoring graduate Teaching Assistants
- Overseeing and further developing the voice lab and the Singing Health Specialist Certificate Program
- Teaching applied lessons for a limited number of voice majors in all degrees
- Maintaining an active national/international scholarly presence
- Serving on graduate committees and guiding students’ graduate pedagogy theses and projects
- Advising students in curricular matters and career development opportunities
- Participating in College, University, and professional service activities, including student recruitment.
WHAT WE REQUIRE:
- An earned Doctorate in Voice Performance/Pedagogy or equivalent
- A proven record as a teacher at the collegiate level
- National/international recognition in research and publication
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in creative activity and research, teaching, and service.
- Ability to teach classical and musical theatre techniques/styles and supervise graduate students in doing so
- A commitment to advise and support graduate students’ research and dissertation projects
- Successful recruitment strategies for the voice area and the university
WHAT WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO HAVE
- Experience teaching comparative pedagogical techniques and mentoring graduate students in teaching these techniques
- Vocal pedagogy knowledge as related to the teaching of children and older voices
- Experience teaching transgender voices and familiarity with current related research
- An understanding of current teaching trends, including use of technology
- Experience performing at the regional, national, and international level
- Membership in relevant national professional organizations
