Description
The Emergency Veterinary Clinic (EVC) of Okaloosa/Walton County operates as a 24/7 emergency and critical care hospital with a team of 7 experienced doctors. Located along Florida's picturesque Emerald Gulf Coast, we are excited to introduce our mentorship program aimed at supporting a new grad emergency veterinarian during their transition into the profession.
This one-year program offers comprehensive on-the-job training designed to familiarize participants with the fast-paced environment of emergency and critical care medicine. Upon completion of the program, participants will have the opportunity to apply for a full-time position with our hospital.
Our mentorship initiative is specifically tailored to provide firsthand experience and guidance to first-year graduates or recently graduated veterinarians. Emergency medicine presents unique challenges where diverse cases can arise at any moment. Through supportive mentorship and practical training, our goal is to empower participants to excel in this rewarding field.
The recent graduate will:
- Spend the first month (at minimum) with our Medical Director on their shifts to establish a baseline
- Following this period our Medical Director will provide a written summary detailing skill level and knowledge base, along with an impression of competency.
- Upon completion of the initial rotation, shifts will be 12-14 hours, during which the new veterinarian will work alongside other doctors for ongoing mentorship. They will regularly spend time on shift with different doctors to observe the diversity in practice approaches and case management.
- Example: Thursday – Sunday 12:00pm-12:00am
- Example: Monday – Thursday 10:00am-10:00pm
- Example: Friday – Sunday 7:00am-9:00pm
- Occasional overnights, 6pm-8:00am to acquire taste for overnights with a doctor.
Various tasks and responsibilities include:
- Working alongside the shift doctor in examination rooms or facilitating independent workups.
- Providing treatment and continued assessment of hospitalized cases.
- Possibly assigned to research more advanced/challenging cases by shift doctor.
- Performing wound and laceration repair as determined by the shift doctor.
- Assisting in surgery by scrubbing in and providing support.
- Having the option to select nights or days to be ON-CALL for surgeries or to observe specific procedures, on an elective basis.
- Receiving periodic reviews from mentoring doctors to track progress and improvements.
Benefits and Incentives:
- Compensation of $800 per shift with a guaranteed minimum of 12 shifts per month.
- Signing bonus of $15,000 ($10,000 upon the first paycheck and $5,000 at the 6-month mark).
- Additional $5,000 retention bonus upon completion of the full year of training for new graduates.
- No obligation to remain for the entire year, but returning the signing bonus will be required if leaving early.
