Job Description:
General Objectives:
Reporting to the Safety Manager, the Safety Superintendent is accountable for leading continuous improvement of safety and health at the Marigold Mine. The Safety Superintendent will develop and facilitate the implementation and administration of safety and health management systems across the mine site and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
Key Areas of Responsibilities & Duties:
The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Responsible for supervising the Safety, Health & Security department.
- Supervises the planning and administration of appropriate projects and Safety, Health & Security training programs.
- Serves as a key safety & health resource for mine site management.
- Conducts comprehensive assessments of safety plans, programs, and work activities to identify improvement opportunities including risk assessments and safety inputs into the site risk register.
- Provides support for management's investigation of injuries and incidents, providing training on analytical techniques to find root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Monitors and reports on completion of corrective actions resulting from investigations, inspections, risk analyses, audits, etc.
- Assists in monitoring site contractors for compliance with company and contractual safety & health requirements.
- Proactively lead health and safety for all employees in accordance with all regulatory agencies and policies, procedures, and company and site goals.
- Be a positive role model for personal behaviors regarding compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Targets and achieves results, sets challenging goals, prioritizes tasks, overcomes obstacles, accepts accountability, sets team standards and responsibilities, provides motivation. Holds self and others accountable for performance and deliverables.
- Help develop the annual budgeting and strategic business plan processes. Plans for and uses resources efficiently and effectively.
- Follows and promotes the leadership principles of Marigold Mining Company and SSR Mining.
- Participates as a member of the Nevada Mining Association Health and Safety Committee.
- Represents Marigold during MSHA and State regulatory activities.
- Authors, reviews, and modifies written procedures related to safety, health, and security.
- Prepares technical reports, maintains safety related documentation, and performs analysis of project incident data for undesired trends and recommends corrective actions.
- Supervise Annual Refresher Training program planning, development, and delivery.
- Supervise the Emergency Response Team.
- Manage site security arrangements.
- Responsible for record keeping and reporting related to safety, health, and security.
Required Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Business Administration or Engineering, preferred
- Professional mine safety/health certification (CMSP or CSP), preferred
- Certified MSHA instructor (IS designation).
- Ability to build trust and develop positive working relationships with site personnel and regulatory agencies.
- In-depth experience with MSHA regulatory requirements
- Relentless drive for improving the status quo – being a change agent
- Strong drive and ability to lead and sustain change.
- Strong computer skills, including thorough understanding of Microsoft Office Suite programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to work to tight deadlines.
- Effective written and oral communication skills using all normal forms of business communication, including presenting to large groups.
- Ability to develop strategic plans for the department.
Required Experience:
- 5+ years of experience supervising occupational health and safety within a surface mining environment.
- 3+ years of formal risk management experience using processes such as BowTie and hazard operability analysis.
- 5+ years of experience developing and conducting safety and health training.
- Industrial Hygiene experience.
- Previous Emergency Management Service (EMS) and/or Emergency Response Team (ERT) experience.
- Experience developing, implementing, and managing safety management systems.
- Experience facilitating incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Relevant experience in developing and administering programs to prevent losses involving people, equipment, material, and the environment.
