Job Summary
The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner will rotate through a variety of clinical environments focusing on critical care medicine. They will train for six months prior to joining the Pulmonary Critical Care APC group. Training rotations include Surgical Critical Care, Medical Critical Care, Oncologic Critical Care, and Anesthesia. Other rotations may include Cardiology, Cardiac Critical Care, Nephrology, Oncology, Hematology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Radiology, Gastroenterology, Neurosurgery, Infectious Disease, and Palliative Care. Trainees will be embedded within academic teams at the University of Utah Hospital and affiliates. Hours vary based on rotations typically averaging 40 to 80 hours per week. Upon completion of the training period, trainees will be required to complete a two-year commitment to the University of Utah Pulmonary Critical Care Division as a full-time employee.
Responsibilities
- Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
- Performs physical examinations.
- Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, special imaging studies, and other diagnostic procedures.
- May perform central line placement, arterial line placement, intubation, paracentesis, thoracentesis, chest tube placement and management, cardioversion, lumbar punctures.
- Monitors the level of and adjusts immunosuppressive medications.
- Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
- Formulates appropriate differential diagnosis of medical, surgical, and other conditions.
- Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physician to provide optimal patient medical management.
- Participates in continuing medical education to include specialty and sub-specialty meetings, clubs, boards, and conferences.
- Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
- Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.
- Participates in special projects and committee functions.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
- Current licensure to practice as a Physician’s Assistant from the State of Utah.
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred:
- Certification in ACLS / BLS / NRP / ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.

Preferences
Applicants with experience in critical care or internal medicine preferred. New graduates with exemplary clinical experience will be considered.
