Responsibilities:
- Monitors and responds to triage calls in person and/or on the nurse phone line.
- Works closely with call center registration team and clinic team to deliver exceptional patient experience.
- Talks directly to patients on the telephone and directs them to emergency rooms (ERs), walk-in clinic, home care advice, or schedules patients with their physician during office hours.
- Determines urgency of seeing the patient based on brief assessment and familiarity with a patient’s condition and history.
- Sends patients with high-risk chief complaints such as chest pain, abdominal pain, or severe headaches to ER immediately.
- Arranges appointments for patients who do not need to go to ER but need to see a physician. Consults with physician as needed.
- Telephone triage by providing and documenting advice for home care of illness/conditions; conducting follow-up phone calls regarding patient’s health and progress as necessary.
- Provides patient education regarding disease processes, therapies, and healthful behaviors.
- Assists provider and other clinical staff with obtaining basic vital information, preparing patients for examination, treatment, and minor surgical procedures.
- May be required to draw and collect blood and other samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Administers vaccines and ordered medications by oral, IM, SQ, or ID routes.
- Responsible for tracking system for follow-up appointments related to office visits, laboratory tests, and procedures to regularly follow patients monitoring disease status.
- Schedules referrals for patients with specialists or outpatient as requested by the provider. Completes appropriate forms or requisitions needed for referrals or lab testing, including appropriate CPT/ICD-10 coding.
- Provides appropriate and timely documentation in the patient’s electronic health record using standardized workflows and processes.
- Demonstrates competence in the clinical skills necessary to carry out assigned job duties.
- Thoroughly understands testing (lab and procedures) values and relationship to patient status with accountability to take next steps, as appropriate to scope and licensure.
- Provides education to patients and families using the teach-back method per protocols and guidelines.
- Serves as a clinical resource and professional role model for other nursing staff.
- Prioritizes work tasks and services, completing tasks in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.
- Performs other duties as requested by Rural Health Clinic Manager to facilitate the smooth and effective operations of the office.
- Maintains compliance with CLIA, OSHA, Safety, and Risk Management guidelines.
- Maintains compliance and behaves in a manner consistent with all policies and procedures, including but not limited to Compliance, HIPAA, and personnel workplace rules.
- Balances team and individual responsibilities; is open and objective to others’ views; gives and welcomes feedback; contributes to positive team goals; and puts the success of the team above own interests.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited program for Registered Nurses (ADN).
- Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa for Registered Nurse.
- BLS and Mandatory Reporter certification.
- Previous clinical experience preferred.
- Previous EPIC experience preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to write, read, comprehend, and speak fluent English.
- Ability to understand and apply guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.
This position is Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM, and will work in the call center.
