Responsibilities
- Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic echocardiography and/or vascular ultrasound in conformance with established department techniques and procedures through the proper selection and accurate operation of ultrasound equipment.
- Exerts independent judgment and is responsible for the image quality of the cardiovascular exams performed.
- Coordinates and administers Definity contrast during technically difficult echocardiogram studies.
- Assists the reviewing physician in the interpretation of the technical aspects of the completed examination.
- Maintains knowledge of and demonstrates proficiency in the operation of the ultrasound equipment. Reports equipment failures to supervisor.
- Provides proper explanation of procedures to patients, families, and others as needed to ensure the patient’s understanding of the examination.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of patients while in the sonographer's care.
- Assists in the transfer of patients to and from the examination table and provides proper immobilization devices for positioning or transporting as required.
- Maintains responsibility for ultrasound equipment, supplies, and records.
- Maintains a log of exams read by the cardiologist for professional billing and completes exam charging.
- Coordinates the schedule for patients and procedures for efficient patient flow. Requires coordination of various aspects surrounding the studies with other departments and clinical care providers as appropriate. Assists with problem resolution.
- Performs other related duties such as EKGs.

Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents, infections, and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
Maintains necessary departmental files, reports, and records of diagnostic examinations performed, according to hospital policies.
Develops a proactive mind-set towards the job. Observes opportunities for improvement, formulates ideas, and communicates those ideas with their supervisor and/or other staff. Implements work habits that lead to continuous quality improvement.
Displays a high level of initiative, works with minimal supervision, demonstrates responsible behavior, and has excellent attention to detail.
Assists with production and distribution of informational materials concerning cardiovascular programs and services to surrounding communities and clinical care providers.
Demonstrates self-development by keeping abreast of current cardiovascular trends and is willing to obtain additional training.
Assists with updates to policies and procedures for cardiovascular diagnostic exams.
Participates in the evaluation, selection, and integration of changing health care technology and information systems that support patient care needs and the efficient utilization of human resources.
Provides in-service education on ultrasound procedures as requested by other members of the health care team.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an AMA approved school of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
- Medical Sonography experience.
- RDCS and RVT certification by ARDMS required.
- Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
- Maintain proficiency in department PACS, RIS, and EMR.
- Technical aptitude – ability to learn new systems quickly.
