What You Will DoThe Advanced Research in Cyber Systems Group (A-4) of the Analytics, Intelligence, and Technology (A) Division. A-4 is seeking a deputy group leader to assist in leading a team of R&D staff, developers, system administrators,
project managers, and students who are innovative, conducting research and development of cyber security solutions in support of the national security mission of Los Alamos National Laboratory. As an integral member of
the highly collaborative A-Division Leadership team, the A-4 Deputy Group Leader provides leadership and technical and operational oversight for programmatic execution by Group staff, facilitating the success of individuals
and teams in A-4. The Deputy Group Leader will enable the staff, foster a culture of innovation and continuous learning, develop, mentor, and sustain the workforce to position the group for success in the present and future.
A-4 conducts research and development in four primary areas. AI assurance, anticipating risks posed by new machine learning innovations and developing guardrails to make complex AI systems trustworthy and reliable for
national security applications. Provably secure systems, conducting hardware and software research and development to provide the highest levels of assurance that systems operate within given parameters and are not
susceptible to particular attacks or vulnerabilities. Critical system design and analysis, creating systems and software for "no-fail" national security missions, designing and analyzing Operational Technology (OT) hardware and
software for Los Alamos internal systems, and conducting security analyses of IT and OT systems for other government agencies and organizations. Cybersecurity workforce development and training, conducting cyber security
incident response training for US federal government, state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, government contractors, US critical infrastructure, and international partner's government and critical infrastructure.
The Deputy Group Leader will be expected to:
- Provide oversight, support, and coordination of work, security and safety systems and quality assurance, identify, manage and mitigate technical and organizational risks, and provide timely/accurate delivery of
high-quality technical products. - Increase the impact of A-4 by leading or partnering to advance the development and broad utilization of complex hardware, software, database, networking solutions across the Division and Laboratory;
enhance the competitive position of Group capabilities; help set the LANL cyber R&D strategy. - Work with the A-Division leadership team, Laboratory program offices, and key stakeholders to develop, plan, and execute innovative projects and programs to enable/build collaborations across the institution.
- Provide leadership to staff and take the initiative in strategic workforce development, succession planning, recruiting, retention, ethical and respectful work environment, and diversity of employees.
- Assist in performance and salary management of staff; strategic workforce planning; providing growth and development opportunities; and recognizing individual and team accomplishments.
- Identify facility needs and technology investments required to promote operational and technology sustainment for the group.
- Assist in managing A-4's internal budgets supporting research, development, and group operations.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical Experience- Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in one or more A-4 core competencies: artificial intelligence/machine learning, incident response, computer forensics, network analysis, protocol analysis/reverse engineering,
firmware or software reverse engineering, cryptography, formal methods, statistics/mathematics, Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity
training, education, and workforce development, quantum communication, quantum key distribution, Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGAs), software development, hardware programming, system/network architecture
or administration, or related fields. - Demonstrated working knowledge of U.S. priorities with respect to national and global security.
Leadership- Proven ability to motivate and lead a team with diverse skill sets and expertise through a complex technical risk landscape such as situations with competing or conflicting priorities, or within highly constrained funding
and schedules. - Demonstrated ability to drive a creative, entrepreneurial R&D work environment in which innovation and continuous learning are essential for solving some of the most difficult challenges in science, engineering, and
national security. - Demonstrated passion for and record of continuous personal learning and professional growth.
- Ability to support the A-4 Group Leader with leading group members, working with laboratory organizations which support A-4, interfacing with laboratory leadership, and interacting with external sponsors and visitors.
Project Management- Demonstrated experience in all aspects of project management of technical or operational work to include budget preparation and oversight. Advises in the development of project management plans in accordance with
line and program roles and responsibilities.
Collaboration and Communication- Demonstrated record in developing collaborations, promoting teamwork, building consensus, and communicating effectively with staff, sponsors, and stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills when working with internal and external customers. - Partnering to meet national security deliverables.
Education/Experience
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications
- Active Q/TS and SCI clearance/access.
- Experience working with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Department of Energy, other executive branches supporting national security, and/or the intelligence community.
- Experience conducting and/or overseeing classified work performed in SCIFs, vaults, vault type rooms (VTR), or other classified areas.
- An advanced STEM degree.
- Prior record of program development, development of proposals, marketing of capabilities, and growth of customer relationships.
- Prior experience supervising and leading teams of diverse individuals.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
