This role fills and maintains automated dispensing systems.
Acts as the primary trainer for new pharmacy technicians and interns, acts as a primary resource for new department procedures, onboarding, and cross-training. Participates in interviewing and hiring of pharmacy team members, and also coordinates, facilitates, and monitors training of new pharmacy technicians. Responsible for ongoing training for current employees so that all staff are operating to the highest level of competence.
Lead responsibilities include creating work schedules for the technicians, and developing and delegating workflow, assisting technicians in daily duties, and staffing any pharmacy technician position as needed. Assists management in complying with all laws, regulations, and guidelines set forth by any regulatory agency, including but not limited to the NM Board of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA, TJC, EPA, etc.
Coordinates and performs monthly and biennial controlled substance inventories under the direction of the Director; reports all discrepancies and findings to Director. Oversees pharmacy technician controlled substance duties, ensures vault discrepancies are reviewed and resolved per policy. Acts as the primary point of contact for daily functions surrounding controlled substances.
Maintains, inspects, and updates crash carts, all specialized pharmacy medication boxes and trays. Ensures medications, IVs, and all other supplies are stored under proper conditions and are labeled properly. Responsible for oversight of pharmacy automation including automated dispensing machines, and assists pharmacy staff and other staff members in the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the automated medication distribution process. Coordinates the implementation of new automation equipment and software.
Orients pharmacy staff to automation equipment and serves as a resource for ancillary departments (nursing, anesthesia, respiratory, etc.) and serves as an education resource for employees regarding automation software and equipment issues. Assists management in overseeing sterile and non-sterile compounding, including hazardous medications and chemotherapy, all under the direction of a pharmacist.
Fills medication carts on a daily basis.
Prepares orders and maintains inventory for the pharmacy department.
Analyzes Par vs Usage data and recommends changes to the Director to optimize inventory.
Reviews and stocks incoming deliveries of medication and supplies. Receives, unpacks, checks quantities against invoices, and puts up medications, IVs, and supplies under proper conditions. Represents the pharmacy department on hospital committees as delegated by the Director.
This position demonstrates a commitment to customer service and patient safety, and functions independently to complete all pharmacy-related duties and projects effectively, efficiently, timely, and proficiently as requested or required by the Director.
Demonstrates willingness to take on additional responsibilities and to help the department meet service requirements at all times. Achieves and maintains satisfactory and respectful working relationships with pharmacy leadership, pharmacy staff, and other departments.
Repackages bulk medications.
Identifies problems that require referral to vendor support and coordinates communication with appropriate service personnel. Maintains through waste reduction, safe practices, and optimization of Omnicells.
Minimum Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Required Skills
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Licenses
Registered Pharmacy Technician in New Mexico upon hire. Must be registered with New Mexico Board of Pharmacy (NMBP).
Certified nationally by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) upon hire. Must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
Must be Sterile IV Compounding certified.
Must hold Chemotherapy certification.
Previous Lead/Supervisory experience preferred.
