The LPN or CMA provides care and support to patients under the direction of the physician or advance practice practitioner. This position requires an ability to perform a wide variety of patient care activities, including the ability to screen telephone calls as directed by the physician, perform certain receptionist duties, and assist the physician with any necessary procedures on patients, from birth to geriatrics including lab duties. Versatility and a willingness to become familiar with all aspects of the clinic are required. Cross-training is required, as staffing needs dictate. This position is involved in the coordination of patient care activities with outside providers and serves as a liaison between patients and physicians.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Rooms patients and reviews health history, addresses preventative maintenance issues and is knowledgeable of age-specific growth and development as related to the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient as appropriate. Accurately collects and records data as appropriate at the patient contact and requirements of Meaningful Use and The Joint Commission.
- Possesses knowledge of tests and procedures as they relate to specific specialties. Recognizes significant values and works with the provider to notify patients of results and follow-up activities in a timely manner as defined by clinic practice/policy.
- Assists the provider with medical procedures and exams following Universal Protocol relating to the capabilities and age-specific criteria of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, utilizing protective devices as needed to maintain the integrity of medical treatment if necessary. Administers medication as directed by the provider and demonstrates the ability to recognize and report any side effects associated with this.
- Communicates and/or completes provider orders to outside sources (i.e., pharmacy, other clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.) Also assists in the completion of various medical forms (i.e., RTW, school forms, DOT, workers compensation, consent forms, FMLA).
- Screens phone calls, collects all pertinent data, communicates this information to the provider, and directs or implements appropriate care utilizing provider direction or preferences.
- Performs laboratory testing covered by CLIA, performs venipuncture, prepares specimens for transport, and complies with all quality measures. Ensures all nurse-rendered services are captured and completion of ABN form as appropriate.
- Assists with appointment scheduling of office visits/referrals/diagnostic testing/therapies/surgeries. Responsible for working with the pre-authorization department or insurance companies to initiate referrals and to obtain approvals, pre-certifications, and prior authorization for medical care and treatment. Assists in completion of registration and departure process as necessary.
- Maintains equipment in a clean and safe condition at all times.
Requirements of this position include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- CMA - Completion of Certified Medical Assistant Program; Registered Medical Assistant; Certified Medical Assistant Certification
- LPN - Current Wisconsin LPN license; 1 year experience as a LPN in a clinic or acute care setting is preferred
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English and Spanish. Cognitive process to interpret office situation and respond appropriately; adaptable to change; able to cope with stress and criticism.
