The Surgical Technologist 2 works under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that the equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Surgical Technologist is an expert in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

- Functions as a member of the surgical team in the role of the scrub person.
- Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
- Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
- Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintains the sterile field.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge and proficient practice in the first scrub role in the majority of the surgical procedures.
- Applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques.
- Applies knowledge related to emergent situations and surgical procedures in the operating room.
- Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care.
- Acts as an informal resource for other technologists with less experience.
- Provides support in the training of students and onboarding of new surgical technologists.
- Serves as a mentor and role model.
- Reviews all operational information related to efficiency and productivity matrices and established targets.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School diploma or equivalent and/or Graduated from an accredited Surgical Technology program.
Certification and Licensing: Certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred. Current AHA Basic Life Support certificate required.
Experience: Minimum 4 years of relevant experience.

Department Specific Functions:
- Dons surgical attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
- Performs the surgical scrub and dons gown and gloves.
- Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
- Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulating nurse.
- Assists the team members in gowning and gloving.
- Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
- Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
- Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
- Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure.
- Maintains a neat and organized sterile field. Labels medications and solutions on the surgical field according to the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).
- Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
- Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
- Sponges or suctions the operative site.
- Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
- Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
- Performs additional counts as necessary, during relief, prior to closing, and final, according to the surgical counts policy.
- Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices.
- Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Returns instruments to the workroom for decontamination and returns unused supplies and instruments to their designated areas.
- Assists other members of the team with the sanitation/cleaning of the room.
