The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Certified Medical Assistant 2 to work at the UHealth Medical Campus.
Core Job Summary
The Medical Assistant (MA) 2 will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The MA 2 shall assist patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The MA 2 provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The physician in charge may delegate the tasks to oversee the MA 2 to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic. The MA 2 shall adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize, respond to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. The MA 2 provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The MA 2 works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission.
Core Responsibilities
- Abides by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information.
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed.
- Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for physician’s care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures.
- Performs routine laboratory tests.
- Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient’s medical record.
Department Specific Functions
- Take patient vitals and quality measures during in-person and telehealth visits.
- Assist connecting and perform intake- quality measures for telehealth visits.
- Reconstitute Botox and manage medication inventory.
- Assist in procedures such as lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, and nerve blocks.
- Perform blood draws and send samples to the lab following test protocols.
- Abide by ethical behavior standards, therapeutic communication practices, and patient privacy protection.
- Assist providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam rooms with the necessary supplies, instruments, and materials.
- Understand and apply principles of medical and surgical asepsis.
- Prepare patients for physician care by providing basic instructions and information about examination procedures.
- Observe and report any changes in patients’ signs or symptoms.
- Clean and/or sterilize medical instruments while adhering to sterile technique principles.
- Schedule patients for tests and complete necessary laboratory forms.
- Provide patients with care instructions and information from their provider.
- Maintain accurate and complete patient records and documentation.
- Order, stock, and inventory supplies, and assist with clerical duties.
- Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
- Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures, safeguarding University assets.
Core Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate from an approved Medical Assistant educational program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).
- Two (2) years of relevant experience is required.
- Certified or Registered Medical Assistant Certification from the AAMA, NHA, AMT, NAHP, or NHA-NCCT is required.
- American Heart Association Approved BLS.
- HIV Certification.
