The position of Lead Laboratory Technician reports to the Quality Control Manager. The Lead Laboratory Technician’s primary responsibility is Quality Control of Hot Mix including materials sampling and testing before and during the production of Hot Mix Asphalt in our Northern hot mix division.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Aggregate Sampling & Testing:
- Performing various Aggregate Physical Properties Testing including but not limited to Sieve Analysis, Specific Gravity & Absorption, Percent Crushing (CAA & FAA), Moisture Content, Percent Spall Content, Ignition Oven Correction Factors, and other aggregate testing as needed.
- Collecting Stockpile samples for mix design as needed.
- Collecting other Aggregate samples as needed.
- Performing various Hot Mix Asphalt Physical Properties Testing including but not limited to Asphalt Content (Ignition Oven, Extraction, and/or Plant Spot Check), Air Void Content (Bulk Specific Gravity and Maximum Specific Gravity), Core Density testing, and other bituminous related testing as needed.
- Perform Coring and Collection of Hot Mix Asphalt Cores as needed.
- Collecting Bituminous samples as needed.
- Performing density testing as needed.
- Other General Duties:
- Participation in construction site safety & housekeeping daily.
- Maintaining and Cleaning of the laboratory and grounds daily to ensure a safe and professional work environment.
- Assisting and performing laboratory teardown and set up before and after mobilization.
- Perform duties as directed by UBI Management / Supervision.
- Perform additional assignments as requested including ongoing in person or online training.
Qualifications:
- Safety must be one of your core values.
- 5 years related experience in Hot Mix Asphalt & Aggregate Sampling and Testing is recommended, however, we will train an appropriate candidate.
- Must have Level II Mn/DOT Bituminous Plant certification and have experience with Hot Mix Quality Control. Must be able to make proportion changes as necessary to control the mix.
- Excellent communication skills and professional presence.
- Good math and organizational skills.
- Must be able to travel when needed.
- Must be willing to work nights, weekends and long hours when needed.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. regularly and work in mixed indoor and outdoor environments.
Must have current Driver’s License and good driving record. This is a safety-sensitive position; drug testing is required.
