Summary:
The Endoscopy technician is responsible for the utilization of endoscopy equipment and supplies including biopsy forceps, snares, injection needles, cytology brushes, forceps, dilators, cautery, 6-shooters and ERBE cautery. The Endoscopy technician is responsible for all aseptic techniques during the procedure as well as the scope disinfection process. This includes the pre-cleaning of all scopes in the procedure room, manual cleaning post procedure utilizing all manufacturer and Joint Commission guidelines. The incumbent is responsible for the high level disinfection process utilizing AER scope processing equipment. The incumbent is responsible for proper storage, labeling and use of all chemicals used during these three processes as well as the office Manometry probe supplies and disinfection. The incumbent is responsible for the set-up of all supplies in the procedure room, installation of the scope and retrieval and proper specimen labeling during procedure. The Endoscopy Tech supports the physician in the Operating Room during the ERCP cases. This includes the use of stents, and all ERCP equipment. The Endoscopy Tech is responsible for all infection control within the procedure room and scope processing room. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of physicians and assists the RN in quality care of the patient as well as other tasks needed. The Endoscopy technician is also required to be on-call as needed by the unit, which includes weeknights, holidays and weekends. The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or organizational proprietary information, and must handle and protect the information in accordance with hospital and system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of the Hospital.
Responsibilities:
- Assists with Endoscopic procedures
- Appropriately utilizing biopsy forceps, snares, injection needles, cytology brushes, retrieval baskets and forceps, Endostat III Cautery, Bicap machine, ERBE cautery, 7-shooter.
- Assists the physician in performing dilation equipment such as balloons, Maloney dilators and Savory dilators.
- Assists the physician with insertion of PEG tubes and J-Tubes.
- Assists the physician in ERCP procedures including sphincterotomy, stone retrieval, biopsy, lithotripsy, stent placement and the care of equipment utilized.
- Assists with emergent procedures such as foreign body removal and GI bleeding, epinephrine injection, and clips.
- Proper retrieval, care and handling of specimens.
- Maintains Endoscopy Suite in a Ready status.
- Responsible for cleanliness of field.
- Cleans room after each patient as directed.
- Responsible for the post procedure cleaning and sterilization of endoscopes and diagnostic equipment.
- Records disinfection chemical changes and ensures chemicals are at a satisfactory level.
- Changes disinfection chemicals bi-weekly, handling hazardous materials on a regular basis.
- Re-stocks equipment used.
- Manages equipment repair and replacement.
- Orders equipment as needed.
- Sets up suite to receive patients.
- Schedules patient procedures (add-ons)
- Ensures all disinfection equipment and scopes in proper working order.
- Promotes Safety for Patients, Staff and Visitors.
- Assesses emergency equipment (suctioning) and supply checks.
- Demonstrates safe patient handling (positioning patients)
- Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment utilizing principles of infection control, safety and safe operation of equipment.
