Working Title: Assistant Professor of Biochemistry
Appointment Type: Full Time
Purpose of Position: The Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Biochemistry, effective August 2025. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. The successful candidate must be able to teach courses in biochemistry, chemistry, and molecular biology and possess the ability to establish an active, externally funded research program involving undergraduates and/or graduate students. The applicant may have the opportunity to develop other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise or teach lower level courses in support of the liberal learning core and/or the Honors Program. The ability to participate in our Environmental Science M.S. program and prior postdoctoral experience are preferred. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to their success. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3-3.
Minimum Qualifications: The Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank and ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor.
Departmental Information: The Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry is located in the $80 Million integrated science building, which includes dedicated research space for faculty and houses over $2M of chemical instrumentation, including modern spectroscopy instruments, a high resolution LC-MS, a 400 MHz NMR, GC-MS, HPLC, ICP-OES, DSC, spectrofluorophotometer temperature-controlled cell, confocal microscopy, and a variety of molecular biology equipment. The Department oversees the B.S. degree in Chemistry with majors in both Chemistry and Biochemistry and the major in Cellular, Molecular and Physiological Biology under the B.S. degree program in Biology.
