SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Speech Pathologist is competent in evaluating and treating children and adults with speech, language, cognitive, and dysphagia disorders (birth & over in age). They act as consultants for medical and other professional groups in the hospital. The Speech Pathologist supervises and instructs student Speech Pathology Interns during their Internship at St. Elizabeth or St. Joseph Health Center. These duties are performed in a manner that demonstrates the Philosophy/Mission and Values of Humility of Mary Health Partners.
EDUCATION:
· Masters Degree in Speech Pathology
EXPERIENCE:
The Speech Pathologist may have experience when hired or may be hired to fulfill a Clinical Fellowship Year. Following a Clinical Fellowship Year, a Certificate of Clinical Competence awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and an Ohio license obtained through the Ohio Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology must be achieved. If the hire is a new graduate, a temporary license must be obtained before employment begins.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
The Speech Pathologist should have basic knowledge about specific neurological tests, neuroanatomy, and neurological diseases. Analyses and interprets test information. Teaches student Speech Interns. Good manual dexterity in order to perform oral/peripheral examinations and thermal stimulation is necessary. Dexterity to use machinery is also necessary. Work with computer applications.
PROBLEM SOLVING/DECISION MAKING:
Makes decisions based on policy and analysis of facts and general principles. Makes judgment as to the plan of treatment for Speech Pathology clients.
SCOPE OF IMPACT/ACCOUNTABILITY:
Accountable for the communication diagnosis and treatment of clients. Accountable for medical records and billing.
INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION:
Requires use of common courtesy. Has contact with employees, physicians, patients, families, other professionals, and individuals inside and outside of the hospital. Coordinates work with others. Provide feedback to Speech Interns.

Diagnoses speech/language disorders by evaluating possible causes and administering and interpreting results of in-depth testing. Interprets findings of diagnostics to the patient, family, physicians, and nursing staff. Treats speech/language impairments with functional articulatory disorders, stuttering, voice problems, delayed language, and organic disorders including cleft palate, cerebral palsy, aphasia, head injury, dysarthria, dysphagia, and impaired hearing. Determines the need for referral to specialists in medicine, dentistry, education, psychology, social service, and related areas. Counsels pre-operative and post-operative patients as to possible speech or language deficits, and follow-up therapy. Plans, directs, and conducts remedial programs designed to restore or improve communicative efficiency. Writes reports on diagnostic findings, therapy used, and progress made. These written reports as well as verbal reports are disseminated to physicians and other related professionals. Attends meetings and conferences to keep current on ideas and techniques in the field of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Attends meetings at SEHC, SJHC, TAV, and HH and outside of the hospital as a representative of the Speech Pathology Department. Through direct teaching, having the Speech Pathology Interns observe, and by direct observation of the Speech Pathology Intern, provides education and clinical skills as they relate specifically to the neurologically impaired patient and all communicative disorders that may be found in the hospital setting. Coordination of observation activities such as scheduling the interns to observe a CT Scan, MRI, other rehabilitation disciplines, and lectures may be added responsibilities. May have some responsibilities in evaluating and providing feedback to the Student Interns and the University on the performance of the Interns. Upholds resources in a manner consistent with the organizational plan. Participates in HMHP’s recruitment and retention goals. Maintains department resources in a manner consistent with department budgets and departmental activity. Understands cost per unit of service.
