Overview
The On Call Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant performs rounding on Carrier Clinic units during weekend coverage. They provide psychiatric and medical care to patients and residents of Carrier Clinic. Conforms to performance improvement standards of patient care as established through Carrier Policies and Procedures. Provides professional representation of Carrier to other health professionals, community agencies, and the lay public. Psychiatry experience prescribing meds for at least 1 year required.
Responsibilities
- Provide psychiatric and medical treatment to inpatients on the unit to which they are assigned.
- Follow all EMTALA regulations and the Facility requirements concerning EMTALA.
- Completion of a daily progress note including mental health status and diagnosis.
- Completion of medication orders, status, laboratory tests, diets, etc. as needed.
- Complete all documentation/orders as required with timeliness and quality including delinquencies and incident reporting.
- Documentation of unusual incidents.
- Progress note documentation for patients requiring special monitoring, e.g. suicide precautions, seclusion or restraints.
- Review laboratory results and document timely.
- Consultation/liaison with Nursing Supervisor, as needed.
- Respond to nursing requests as needed.
- Assure that all Medical Clearances are completed in a timely and efficient manner when covering Access shifts.
- Respond to Utilization Management Documentation requests efficiently and timely.
- Adhere to performance improvement protocols including clinical pathways.
- Return all patient and family phone calls as needed on a timely basis.
- Required to respond to calls/pages.
- Adhere to timekeeping and payroll policies.
- Be reliable and on time to all scheduled rounding coverage.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Graduate of an approved APN Program.
Interacts well with patients, visitors, and Facility staff, responding promptly to inquiries with tact and sensitivity.
Demonstrates a courteous, cooperative, pleasant, and positive attitude.
Maintains strict standards of confidentiality.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
APN License.
Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification or Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification.
AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification or completed in the first 90 days of employment.
Psychiatry experience prescribing meds for at least 1 year required.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university.
- Successful completion of an approved physician's assistant program, accredited by the AMA Council on Medical Education.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in psychiatry.
- Minimum of 1 year in psychiatry prescribing medication.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Training and experience with patients across the lifespan.
- Training and experience with patients with substance abuse disorders.
- Training and experience with the EPIC (Electronic Healthcare Record (EMR)) system.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Active, unrestricted medical license as a Physician Assistant in New Jersey.
- Active, unrestricted Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) license.
- Active, unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
- Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Psychiatry.
