Under immediate supervision (RT PDP I), general supervision (RT PDP II/III), or direction (PRT/RT PDP IV), the Principal Respiratory Therapist (PRT) or Respiratory Therapist Per Diem Pool (RT PDP), performs basic and advanced respiratory care procedures. The Per Diem Pool (PDP) classifications are distinguished from the Regular classifications in that the incumbents in these classifications receive limited benefits. They may receive shift differential, standby and callback premium pay and will participate in the Ventura County Employees' Retirement Association if they are assigned a biweekly work schedule of 64 hours or more. Incumbents hired into these positions are not guaranteed any specific number of work hours per biweekly pay period, and management has the authority to relieve them from duty when there is insufficient work.
APPROXIMATE SALARIESPrincipal Respiratory Therapist: $26.29 - $36.79 per hour
Respiratory Therapist- PDP I: $34.12 per hour
Respiratory Therapist- PDP II: $37.53 per hour
Respiratory Therapist- PDP III: $40.94 per hour
Respiratory Therapist- PDP IV: $44.32 per hour
Upon recommendation of the Director Health Care Agency, the Director-Human Resources may approve a market-based premium pay (MBPP) of up to $9.36 per hour for Regular Principal Respiratory Therapist incumbents. NOTE: Respiratory Therapist- Per Diem Pool incumbents are not eligible for MBPP.EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

- Under physician orders, performs the full range of respiratory care procedures, including interviewing patients, performing limited physical examinations, and conducting diagnostic tests;
- Trains non-respiratory care hospital staff in procedures relating to respiratory therapy that are shared responsibilities or for cross-discipline training as needed;
- Responds to all patient care-related codes that are called out on the overhead paging system;
- Provides instruction to patients and families in the operation of respiratory equipment and procedures to gain cooperation, allay fears, and maximize effectiveness;
- Maintains patient records, billing documentation, and/or test documentation;
- Assesses patients for appropriate treatment, monitors patients, and reassesses patients to evaluate treatment and any needed adjustments, communicating any recommendations to physicians;
- Administers treatments and medications involving oxygen, oxygen mixtures, aerosol medications, and various respiratory care equipment;
- Performs other related duties as required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Only licensed Respiratory Care Practitioners can provide respiratory care in California therefore, the RCP license must be maintained throughout employment in this classification (the license number must be included on the application)
- Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate by date of hire
- Must possess (or obtain within six (6) months of employment) and maintain a valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- Must possess (or obtain within six (6) months of employment) and maintain a valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver license
- Must be willing to work various shifts and on weekends
- Must be willing to work at two hospital campuses as needed
DESIRED- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Thorough knowledge of: the operating principles of the most commonly used types of respirators and respiratory therapy equipment, including intermittent positive pressure breathing apparatus, nebulizers, humidifiers and oxygen analyzers; cardiopulmonary system and the symptoms common to patients suffering respiratory ailments.
Comprehensive ability to: perform a variety of skilled respiratory therapy treatments in critical care areas; explain to and teach others the fundamentals of respiratory therapy principals, treatments, equipment and supplies; maintain and perform minor repairs to respiratory therapy equipment and to adjust it to individual patient needs; follow written and oral instructions; develop general knowledge and understanding of hospital routine and organization and ability to work closely with medical staff and patients; supervise the work of others.
