General Summary
The Research Scientist in the Clinical Sciences in the Division of Rheumatology will join the Sparks team led by Dr. Jeffrey Sparks. The Research Scientist will work closely with the PI, overseeing and managing multiple projects, including an NIH-sponsored randomized control trial, three NIH-funded R01 grants, as well as other research studies and health interventions. The Research Scientist will be responsible for aspects of project administration, planning and implementing study protocols directly with the PI, overseeing training and management of several staff members on these projects, and participating in other study aspects.
The Research Scientist will also coordinate and carry out study-related activities such as designing data collection instruments and programming study databases, organizing and maintaining various meetings/agendas, assisting with hiring and training of new staff, as well as creating, managing, and maintaining several internal review board protocols.
Primary Responsibilities
- This position includes working closely with the PI as well as clinical research coordinators, junior faculty members, trainees, post docs, and collaborators, as well as other teams both inside and outside of MGB.
- This position will work on the creation and coordination of clinical trials and observational studies, including initial planning, regulatory approval, study logistics and implementation, and long-term data management. The Research Scientist will also provide insight on project development and strategy.
- Responsible for overseeing, orienting, training, and coaching staff, including research assistants and students. Oversees the coordination of staff/faculty schedules when study visits and recruitment are occurring for multiple projects simultaneously. Evaluates staff and assists with annual reviews.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for individuals as it pertains to questions regarding the research studies and IRB protocols for projects.
- Contributes to writing progress reports, regulatory reports for institutional review board approval, human subjects’ annual reviews, development and revision of instruments, and preparation of graphics.
- Contributes to manuscript writing by providing study details. Provides investigators with current references. Independently researches the literature and follows up on specific requests from research staff.
- Contributes to the development of the methods and design of studies, which may include recruitment strategies and data collection protocols. Recommends changes to protocols and enters data according to written protocols.
- Independently develops data tracking systems and logs and maintains up to date records on all research subjects as well as research core service requests.
- Supervises junior staff members and provides assistance to faculty new to research.
- Contacts and collects data on subjects. Evaluates subjects to determine eligibility. Makes independent judgments of suitability of potential participants.
- Conducts surveys and participates in focus group discussions with patients who suffer from rheumatic diseases. Undertakes drafting and implementation of questionnaires, surveys, interviews and other instruments as needed for research projects.
- Communicates regularly with the PIs and research team about all aspects of the research projects.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher in an analytic field, such as biostatistics, informatics, or epidemiology is required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior supervisory experience is preferred.
- At least two years of work experience is required.
- Experience working in Excel, Access and SAS.
- Experience working with Epic is preferred.
- Must have interpersonal skills to interact effectively with persons with chronic disease in order to gain their cooperation in research projects and allay apprehensions.
- Must possess a great deal of integrity to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate accuracy in recording data.
- Must be able to prioritize and organize work responsibilities in order to meet deadlines so as not to hamper the progress of studies.
- Must be able to make independent judgments for the above-mentioned job duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to work independently as well as being a team player.
- Strong attention to detail.
