Your Mission:
As the Senior Director of Human Resources for the Office of the Vice President for Research & Innovation (OVPRI), you will play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of belonging and innovation. Working closely with the Research & Innovation leadership team and the University Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, your mission is to lead and oversee the HR function for OVPRI in a strategic and proactive manner.
What You Will Do:
Strategic Partnership: Collaborate with unit leadership, including R&I internal administrative departments, Cornell research centers, and core facilities. Together, we’ll develop and implement human resource strategies, programs, policies, and practices aligned with the goals and priorities of Research & Innovation and the university.
Talent Management: Ensure the recruitment, development, and retention of a highly qualified, diverse OVPRI workforce, including staff with direct supervision responsibilities within R&I administrative units and OVPRI-affiliated research centers/facilities.
Expert Advisor: Independently counsel and advise unit leadership, supervisors, and staff in areas such as organizational effectiveness, recruitment and retention strategies, employee relations, pay equity, and more. You’ll explore complex HR issues, advocate for the best approaches, and ensure compliance with university policies.
Inclusion Advocate: Implement diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives to create an environment of respect, trust, and inclusion. We value your experience in connecting these practices to our business goals.
Operational Excellence: Lead the R&I HR operations in collaboration with a service-oriented team. We’ll work together to improve processes, develop staff skills, and build an engaged, positive work environment.
What You Will Bring:
- A bachelor’s degree with 7 – 10 years’ experience in HR, or equivalent combination of education and experience in HR management, employee relations, organizational development, and more.
- A deep understanding of various HR aspects and strong problem-solving, collaboration, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to work independently or collaboratively in a team-based environment, maintaining effective work relationships.
- Strong analytical skills and a commitment to ethical workplace practices.
- Known for being an inclusivity champion with a demonstrated skill in understanding cultural differences, and proven experience connecting inclusion and wellbeing practices to business goals.
If you possess all of these, excellent! There are just a few additional qualifications we consider advantageous but not mandatory:
- Experience in higher education.
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification or equivalent.
- Previous leadership of HR personnel or administrative teams.

Pay Range:
$125,614.00 – $153,528.00
