The VCR will report to the Chancellor and oversee the research enterprise across the university. As N.C. A&T seeks to become a culturally responsive R1 institution, the vice chancellor will set strategic priorities for the Division of Research and establish a vision for future growth and success.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution, and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 14,311 students in Fall 2024, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 master's programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is America's top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science bachelor's programs and a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks no. 3 in master's degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, no. 4 in master's degrees in engineering, and no. 11 best business school for women in the nation.
The Division of Research manages all aspects of the research enterprise for the university led by the Vice Chancellor of Research (VCR). The division's responsibilities include identification of funding opportunities; proposal development and preparation; proposal submission; research compliance oversight; project setup, monitoring, invoicing, and closeout; intellectual property protection and commercialization; managing subcontracts, non-disclosure agreements, and material transfer agreements; and reporting to sponsoring agencies.
The VCR oversees twenty-seven staff members across the following units:
- Office of Contracts and Grants
- Office of Financial Compliance
- Office of Sponsored Programs
N.C. A&T is pursuing a strategic blueprint to become an R1 university by 2030. N.C. A&T faculty researchers continue to successfully compete for research grants and contracts, receiving $147.4 million in new awards in FY 2023, up an astonishing $50M from FY 2022, the majority from federal grants. This follows increases in the previous two years, for total growth in new sponsored programs awards of $88 million – 148% — in just four years. Sponsored program expenditures totaled nearly $60 million in FY 2023.
The Division of Research manages the research enterprise at N.C. A&T and is among the three most productive in the UNC System. In emerging and converging disciplines across the spectrum of science and engineering, N.C. A&T researchers are creating new knowledge, spurring economic activity, and improving the quality of life for our community and beyond.
Faculty and students work in laboratories and communities, on farms and in cities, on campus, across the state, and around the globe. They collaborate between academic units and disciplines, with other universities, and with corporate and government researchers. In 20 centers and institutes, as well as in numerous projects with collaborating partners, N.C. A&T's faculty and students are creating discoveries and innovations.
N.C. A&T's faculty and students have been granted 66 U.S. patents. In recent years, it has launched eight new centers of excellence in such areas as integrative health disparities and equity, social justice, autonomous vehicle technology product design, and advanced manufacturing.
Requirements:
- An earned doctorate or other appropriate terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline from an accredited university.
- Excellent leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, personnel management, operational, facilities management, and administrative experience in a comparably complex setting.
- Ten years of progressively responsible experience in a combination of research leadership and administration in a large, complex environment in higher education, or the context of a large research institute or national laboratory.
- Experience working with governmental agencies, including direct experience with federal, foundation, and/or industry funding mechanisms.
- Documented research accomplishments, including as a recipient of major grants and author of peer-reviewed scholarly publications.
- Experience leading teams and developing organizational structures, including budgeting, financial oversight, compliance, and supervising and managing personnel.
Preferred:
- A distinguished record of scholarship and leadership within an academic setting sufficient for appointment as a tenured full professor within one of the university's academic disciplines.
- A strong vision for and commitment to research in a large, public, research university.
- Excellent administrative skills including strategic planning and evaluation, budgeting, personnel management, and facilities management.
- An ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multiple administrative units throughout the campus, nationally and globally.
- Knowledge of major research issues facing global research universities.
- Experience leading relevant national research network(s) with experience in translating knowledge of national research priorities to home institution or organization.
- Prior leadership experience in developing or improving a university research ecosystem, including experience with research administration, compliance, or another relevant area.
- Ability to lead change effectively in a complex and evolving research university.
- Experience in developing large and complex interdisciplinary grants.
- Demonstrated knowledge of academic research processes in a diverse and competitive funding environment, with strong knowledge of national research priorities and networks.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to collaborate with a broad set of stakeholders and lead teams to achieve desired outcomes.
