General Description
Appointed by and reporting directly to an Oversight Committee, the Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Co-Director of Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Pediatric Heart center shall serve as the leader of the pediatric cardiac program at Johns Hopkins Medicine in addition to fulfilling all clinical, research, and academic programmatic goals as set forth in the letter of employment and other related documents. The Chief is dually responsible for achieving programmatic excellence as a senior faculty leader as well as maintaining quality and safety standards of the clinical program and financial viability of the business unit.
I. Specific Responsibilities and Duties
In addition to mutually agreed upon goals to be developed in partnership with the department director, the division chief shall assume the following responsibilities and duties, with 10% administrative time set annually by the chair:
Administration
- Support JHM and Department strategic plan and initiatives.
- Oversee recruitment and retention efforts of clinical teams and staff members.
- Manage and be held accountable for the Pediatric heart center financial performance, including all expenditures within the span of control.
- With Co-Directors oversee preparation of yearly budget with administration and JHH fiscal management team, including all volume/revenue projections and direct expense estimates.
- Maintain fiscal solvency of the center.
- Present progress reports quarterly to oversight committee, including business development and financial performance.
- Direct the development of standard and ad hoc performance reports that will aid in the effective business management of the center.
- Provide leadership and oversight to the pediatric heart center employees.
Academic
- Maintain and enhance graduate medical education training programs in the center and develop metrics for performance of programs and program directors.
- Monitor Faculty/Resident evaluations, scheduling, monitor case participation and logs, duty hours and biannual performance evaluation of faculty.
- Mentor junior faculty in clinical decision making/intraoperative support.
- Closely manage and oversee the development of new recruits and propose corrective actions to ensure progress is consistent with the original offer letter and expectations set forth by the chair.
Clinical
- Oversee a high-quality improvement process to evaluate outcomes, best practices and dashboards to evaluate the clinical activity within the pediatric cardiac surgery program.
- With Center Co-Directors ensure growth in pediatric cardiac surgery volumes as outlined in the business plan through referring physician outreach and effective marketing strategies.
- Oversee clinical operations of the pediatric heart center surgical faculty, residents and fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other Center staff.
- Monitor and maintain acceptable patient satisfaction (HCAPS/CGCAPS).
- Oversee coordination of clinical services: call schedule, coverage, credentialing for surgeons, nurse practitioners, and nurses.
- Recruitment and retention of clinical team and support staff.
- With Co-Directors work closely to ensure that efficient inpatient and outpatient clinical operations and objectives/deliverables are met for relevant purchased service agreements.
Research
- Review research activities of the center including programs, projects, and budgets.
- Manage the pediatric cardiac surgery database.
- Mentor junior faculty in research activities.
- Provide guidance and oversight of research activities in collaboration with the vice chair for academic affairs and the research leadership advisory committee.
- Undertake a systemic review of the research enterprise and develop a plan to enhance and expand research operations, in conjunction with the vice chair for academic affairs.
Quality
- Responsible for monthly review of quality and clinical outcomes.
- Manage the pediatric cardiac surgery database.
- Oversee with Co-Directors monthly morbidity and mortality review of specialty specific and or hospital data (MHACs) monthly morbidity and mortality review (multidisciplinary).
- Participate in JH Hospital Quality Assessment and Process Improvement (QAPI).
- Actively participate in specific quality improvement activities as indicated.
Philanthropy
- With Heart Center Co-Directors work with JHM Development Office to identify potential donors to support the activities of the Heart Center.
- Meet with prospective donors to the Heart Center to outline the activities and mission of the Heart Center toward solicitation of gifts in support of the Center's activities.
- Maintain ongoing contact with potential donors toward philanthropic support for the Center.
The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not include all components of the Department faculty compensation program or pay from participation in the Department incentive compensation programs. Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the salary range stated herein.
