Metro Transit’s Rail Division is hiring a Special Duty Assignment (SDA) Rail Operations Chief, working at the Link Control Center (LCC). This leadership position plays a critical role in ensuring the delivery of light rail transit services and the day-to-day coordination, direction and supervision of personnel and equipment of the Link Control Center.
The ideal candidate will be current on their LCC Qualification. They will be able to communicate effectively with a diverse employee work group, to proactively solve problems that impact service delivery, encourage a safety culture while inspiring high standards of customer service excellence, as well as the ability to motivate employees through building respect and trust. The Rail Operations Chief will promote teamwork, resolve conflicts that arise, and promote a collaborative environment.
We are only accepting applications from current KC employees who have passed their initial probation period. We will fill one Special Duty Assignment estimated to last 6 months, and it may be extended. Also, this recruitment may be used to fill future Special Duty Assignments in this specific role.

Please note: This position is considered safety sensitive. Work Schedule and Location
This position has on-call responsibilities (24/7) and must respond to emergency situations as needed. Base location for LCC is 3407 Airport Way S, Seattle WA 98134, and the backup LCC at 1263 6th Ave S., Seattle, WA 98134. We anticipate this SDA LCC Chief will primarily work the graveyard shift and must be able to fill in for other shifts at the LCC as needed (day or swing). This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not overtime eligible.
We are looking for candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Two years of experience in a transit operations environment OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the work.
- Current on LCC Certification.
- Ability to accurately use Rail SCADA Systems including Emergency Ventilation System, Building Management System, Train Control System and Emergency Management Panels; as well as the ability to operate the SCADA based Traction Power Substation and train signal controls.
- Working knowledge of CCTV systems and radio communication technology and terminology.
- Ability to think strategically and problem solve under pressure in a safe and timely manner.
- Knowledge of light rail vehicle operation, train and traffic signal systems, train wayside equipment, train switch operation and all associated regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability in complying with applicable safety standards and requirements as it applies to a public transit system.
- Knowledge and experience in the application of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and labor union contracts.
- Ability to resolve conflict and attain mutually beneficial solutions.
- Experience in building relationships and trust with employees and be excited and motivated to manage our diverse employee team, helping to build a culture of care, inclusion and belonging.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to listen carefully to others with an open mind while giving and receiving feedback.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Valid Washington State Driver's License with an acceptable driving history.
- Ability to successfully complete National Incident Management System (incident command system) training.
Desired Qualifications (not required):
- Experience interfacing with internal and external stakeholders in a complex and fast paced environment.
- Experience in supervising and developing direct reports.
- Knowledge of SMS safety principles related to transit operations.
