About the Job:
The Counsel, Employment and Compliance position reports to the Chief HR Officer with a dotted line into the legal department. This attorney’s responsibilities include providing advice and counsel to various functions across the organization, including Odyssey’s Human Resources department, with a particular emphasis on employment and workplace issues. Although this role will have a focus on employment law, the attorney’s areas of responsibility will also include other general corporate legal issues that may be assigned from time to time.
In This Role, You Will:
- Employment Law Counsel: Advise on a range of employment and workplace issues, including hiring, benefits, performance management, workplace conduct, and terminations. Ensure compliance with U.S. federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, FCRA, ADEA, ERISA, OFCCP regulations, workers' compensation). Draft and review employment-related agreements and policies.
- Investigations & Claims Management: Lead and advise on internal investigations related to employment matters. Manage employment claims and charges, acting as the primary liaison with outside counsel as needed.
- Policy Development & Compliance: Review and draft organizational policies and procedures. Partner with HR to develop employment-related policies and ensure compliance with employment and privacy laws. Provide legal counsel on ERISA and retirement plans.
- Collaboration with HR & Business Leaders: Collaborate with talent acquisition and hiring managers to ensure equitable and compliant hiring processes. Partner with HR leaders to promote positive associate relations and support DEI initiatives.
- Corporate Legal Matters: Assist with other corporate legal issues, including mergers and acquisitions, contract review, and special projects. Support compliance with privacy laws and contribute to broader business strategies.
- Training & Risk Mitigation: Provide training on employment law, best practices, and new legislation. Identify legal risks and create strategies to mitigate employment-related liabilities.
- Fostering Odyssey Culture: Promote and uphold Odyssey’s culture of collaboration, integrity, respect, and unity of purpose within the legal department and across the organization.

Required:
- J.D. Degree required.
- Minimum of 5 years post-JD work experience as an employment law attorney required.
- Must live in, or be willing to relocate to, the Charlotte, NC metropolitan area.
- Must be licensed to practice law in North Carolina.
- Effective client-counseling skills, plus strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities required.
- Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
- Prior in-house corporate experience preferred.
Location: This is an in-office role based in Charlotte, NC. No travel is anticipated.
