About CAI
Founded in 1973, Community Associations Institute and its 64 U.S. and international chapters provide information, education and resources to the homeowner leaders and professionals who govern and manage homeowners associations, condominium communities and cooperatives. CAI’s 47,000-plus members include community association board members, other homeowner leaders, community managers, association management firms and other professionals who support common-interest communities.
The Washington Metropolitan Chapter (WMCCAI) was founded in 1973, is composed of 11 directors, currently has more than 3,300 members and has an annual budget of more than $1.5 million. We serve the educational, business, and networking needs of community associations from Washington, DC to suburban Maryland and Northern Virginia. Position Overview
The Chapter Executive Director (CED) will be responsible for leading and managing the day-to-day operations of WMCCAI, ensuring its continued success and alignment with the strategic goals set by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will be the face of the chapter, engaging with members, partners, sponsors, and the broader community to support the mission of WMCCAI. The CED must possess highly developed interpersonal communication skills and a demonstrated capacity to build and maintain relationships with diverse communities, chapter volunteers and employees, organizations, government, media, and other interests.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Planning – Provide visionary leadership to ensure the strategic growth and sustainability of WMCCAI. Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan.
- Event Planning/Fundraising – Oversee planning of all education and networking events. Provide leadership in fundraising and sponsorship development efforts to secure resources for the chapter programs.
- Membership Development – Drive membership growth and engagement through innovative programs and services.
- Marketing, Public Relations and Communications - Serve as a key spokesperson and representative for WMCCAI at events, meetings, and with external stakeholders. Develop and maintain strong relationships with members, sponsors, industry leaders, and government officials. Ensure effective marketing, communications, and public relations strategies to enhance WMCCAI’s visibility and influence.
- Administrative/Operations – The CED will be responsible for the day-to-day efficiency of the office to include but not limited to managing vendors, staff, supplies and equipment that support the chapter’s mission. The ED will also maintain corporate records, as well as accurate member records.
- Financials – Oversee financial management, including budgeting, reporting, and ensuring financial sustainability.
- Staff and Volunteers - Lead staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance work culture. The CED will report to the Chapter Board of Directors and will supervise administrative and programmatic staff.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of leadership experience, preferably in nonprofit management, association management, or a related field.
- Demonstrated success in organizational leadership, strategic planning, and operational management.
- Proven ability to work effectively with a board of directors, volunteers, and a diverse member base.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Software (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Project and Adobe), websites and social media.
- CMP (Certified Meeting Planner) or CAE (Certified Association Executive) preferred.
Competencies
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills (i.e. ability to prioritize, delegate, adapt, etc.)
- Experienced in managing and mentoring small staff (3 years or more)
- Strong financial acumen (includes budget experience)
- Experience with fundraising, sponsorship development, and revenue generation.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
- Excellent organizational planning skills and ability to multi-task.
- Creative problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge or familiarity with community associations is a plus.
Physical and Work Requirements:
- Applicant is required to drive his/her own car and must maintain a good driving record.
- Applicant may be called upon to lift, move, or carry objects that weigh up to and include fifty pounds.
- Applicant understands he/she must work inside, as well as outside, sometimes facing inclement weather conditions in the performance of his/her job duties.
- Applicant further acknowledges that his/her duties may be changed at the company's discretion based upon the decision of the Board of Directors.
