What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Solutions Architect 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Weapons Research Services (WRS) is conducting a search for a senior-level Data Integration Architect who will provide strategic and technical leadership for nuclear weapons data infrastructure at LANL and across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). Reporting to the WRS Division Leader and working with the Laboratory's key stakeholders, Leaders, Chief Data Architect, and National Security AI Office, this position will design and implement data structures that align with the Laboratory's complex range of objectives and facilitate modern data capabilities (automated analysis, digital thread, prompt engineering, etc.).
The WRS portfolio includes management of sensitive and secure data, systems, and networks. The data integration architect will employ strategies and tools from the discipline of enterprise architecture aimed at simplifying, streamlining, standardizing, and enhancing the accessibility and interconnectivity of data across a complex environment.
Solutions Architect 4 ($135,300-$227,700)
The Solutions Architect 4 (Senior Data Integration Architect) will collaborate with business and IT leaders to align data architecture with business objectives. The position is responsible for designing IT infrastructure to meet current and long-term data requirements for operating environments within the nuclear security enterprise, ensuring scalability, security, and efficiency. As such, this person will: identify data storage and processing requirements for structured/semi-structured/unstructured data; evaluate existing data architecture specifications; and oversee the selection, creation, refinement, and integration of IT systems, portals, warehouses, and databases. This person will work with data managers to define and enforce data standards and policies and to prepare organizations to quickly evolve their products, services, and data to take advantage of business opportunities inherent in emerging technologies. Furthermore, this person will represent nuclear weapons data needs at architectural governance boards/councils and other relevant councils.
Solutions Architect 5 ($163,000-$282,200)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will have more significant design and architecture responsibilities. Your collaboration responsibilities will also encompass more mentoring and coaching, as well as sharing of expertise and results both within the division and in broader NSE community contexts.

Expertise in distributed data architecture models (e.g. Fabric, Lakehouse, Mesh), especially solutions that best enable automated analysis, machine learning, and AI technologies. Proficiency in data modeling, database design, and data warehousing.
Project Management and Strategic Planning
Proven leadership and tactical planning for execution of moderately large and/or complex data integration projects within the approved scope, schedule, and budget baseline. In particular, will demonstrate success: developing and executing a roadmap that describes how the target data architecture will become reality; conducting readiness assessments; designing and maintaining performance expectations of the overall platform and individual tools/systems regarding quality, cost, and timeliness; and developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions.
Business Value and Innovation
Demonstrated experience in the ability to turn business strategy into an architecture framework that enables adaptability, scalability, availability, and re-use of structured and unstructured data. Stays ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies.
Communication and Collaboration
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with demonstrated experience interacting with all levels of personnel and stakeholders and forming productive collaborations.
Additional Job Requirements for the Solutions Architect 5:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires the following:
Advanced knowledge of semantic technologies and capabilities (e.g. metadata management, ontologies, natural language processing) and best practices for implementing a semantic layer across data architecture. Strong knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
Education/Experience Level 4: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience Level 5: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 15 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the LANL Weapons Programs and the Nuclear Security Enterprise
- Knowledge of Department of Energy (DOE) enterprise data solutions (e.g. Energy Data Exchange) or National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) solutions (e.g. PRIDE)
- Experience working with DOE or NNSA at headquarters or field office level, or with state or federal regulators, or other national security agencies
- Experience leading professional societies, DOE/NNSA complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external collaborations
- Experience working on classified networks
- Experience in R&D data management
- Experience in organizational knowledge capture and transfer
- Expertise in cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and familiarity with FedRAMP requirements
- Expertise in big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), data integration technologies (e.g. Boomi, MuleSoft), and data analysis/visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, MicroStrategy, Power BI)
- Expert-level knowledge of Laboratory and federal regulations related to data management
- Working knowledge of other architect domains such as applications architecture or network architecture
- Author of presentations, technical reports, and papers intended for national and international audiences
- Data Management Association (DAMA) Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) certification desired
- Current DOE Q clearance, or equivalent
Work Location: The work location for this position is on-site and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
- Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
