The Opportunity
The Senior Principal Electrical Engineer works in our Princeton, NJ location in the Research and Development Engineering group for our Abbott Point of Care Division (i-STAT).
The person in this role will work in a lead role in one or more aspects of electrical design and development of Point of Care medical device design and accessories. In this regulated business, you will work in a disciplined product development process that meets global medical device standards and regulations.
What You’ll Work On
- Innovative Technology: Independently identify and implement new technologies and methods for new product development and process improvements.
- Technical Leadership: Lead technical teams in electrical design, testing, and sustaining engineering activities.
- Full Lifecycle Development: Participate in the full lifecycle of development, from specification and design through implementation, testing, and support.
- Electrical Design Expertise: Provide technical leadership in areas such as schematic capture, layouts, electro-mechanical design, and verification testing, including project scheduling activities.
- Product Development: Actively participate in cross functional product development teams for new products and services.
- Operations: Engage with manufacturing operations to resolve issues, implement quality and cost driven improvements, and ensure uninterrupted supply of products to our customers.
- Compliance: Facilitate a systems-level approach to EMC, wireless, and product safety compliance for new and existing products by collaborating with internal teams and external compliance labs.
- Global Regulatory View: With Quality and Regulatory Assurance, track changes in standards and regulations and plan updates or mitigations to maintain compliance. Ensure compliance with corporate and divisional policies and external standards and regulations.
- Independent Judgment: Exercise independent judgment in recommending and implementing significant and complex new tools/process improvements to meet company objectives in new product development, product testing, process improvement, and regulatory compliance.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead and/or collaborate with cross-functional team members to ensure robust and high-quality product designs.
- External Engagement: Work with external consultants on system and electrical design and testing issues.
- Quality Focus: Deliver high-quality electrical designs within schedule constraints. Research technical issues and propose approaches that meet product and quality requirements.
- Team Collaboration: Adjust priorities and work within a team environment to achieve common objectives for multiple projects.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronic engineering or related engineering field.
- Minimum 10 years experience in electrical, electronic engineering or related engineering field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree preferred.
- 11+ years work experience in circuit design, EMC, Wireless and Product Safety testing.
- Relevant experience in electrical engineering and at least 2 years of engineering management experience.
- Subject matter expertise to specify, design, verify and validate new analog and digital electrical design in accordance with global standards and regulations.
- Thorough knowledge of digital circuitry including Microcontrollers, communication methods (I2C, RS-232, SPI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi), high performance computers, and various interface circuits and topologies.
- Strong technical background and knowledge of the EMC testing and Product Safety procedures/standards to worldwide regulatory agencies.
- Thorough knowledge of analog signal processing techniques, operational amplifier, Transistor, and control circuits.
- Hands-on experience and knowledge of measurement techniques and analysis.
- Skilled with PCB CAD and Layout tools (ORCAD Capture, Mentor Graphics PADS, Pspice for Simulation).
- Working knowledge and experience with regulations, standards and Directives affecting the IVD medical device industry is a plus.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of GxP, ISO and medical device regulations and the development/implementation of new products/processes in a regulated environment.
