Department Summary:
The Health and Society Innovation Center's Health Behavioral and Social Sciences Department is seeking a Chief Scientist, Health Behavioral and Social Sciences. This hybrid position is based in McLean, Baltimore, or Bedford. The Health Behavioral and Social Sciences Department focuses on advancing research and innovation in health-related behavioral and social sciences. It aims to improve health outcomes by understanding and influencing human behavior and social factors. The department collaborates with experts in various fields to develop strategies and solutions that address health communication, health equity, and social determinants of health. It leverages advanced technologies and interdisciplinary approaches to support health initiatives and contribute to federally funded research and development programs.
Job Description:
The Chief Scientist, Health Social and Behavioral Sciences, will lead the growth, development, and impact of health behavioral and social sciences within the Health Innovation Center. This role focuses on aligning outcomes with strategic priorities, ensuring technical excellence, and fostering partnerships and research development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Capability Growth and Development:
- Drive the expansion and enhancement of health behavioral and social sciences capabilities.
- Ensure alignment of outcomes with strategic priorities across health-focused work programs.
- Technical Quality Assurance:
- Oversee and ensure the highest technical quality across projects and work programs.
- Implement best practices and innovative approaches to maintain excellence.
- Partnership Development:
- Lead the development and maintenance of strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.
- Collaborate with external partners to enhance research and application efforts.
- Research Development and Application:
- Foster the development and application of health behavioral and social research.
- Encourage innovative research initiatives that address critical health challenges.
- Technical Capability Evolution:
- Nurture the evolution of the department's technical capabilities.
- Mentor and support staff in advancing their expertise and skills.
Basic Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 7 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 4 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Able to obtain a Suitability Clearance.
- Demonstrated ability to design, conduct, analyze and lead both qualitative and quantitative research.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and mentor staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate, network and negotiate across matrixed teams, departments, and divisions.
- Experience solving complex health challenges using health social and behavioral sciences.
- This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in health social sciences, behavioral sciences, or a related field.
- 10 years of related experience.
- Extensive experience in leading health-focused research and capability development.
- Proven track record of driving strategic outcomes and technical excellence.
- Strong leadership skills with experience in partnership development and stakeholder engagement.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
