The Legislative Audit Bureau is an award-winning, nonpartisan legislative service agency whose objective analyses and recommendations help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of state government operations. We are looking for detail-oriented professionals to join our team and contribute to the Bureau’s important mission. The Bureau’s work helps the legislature fulfill its responsibility to provide effective oversight of Wisconsin state government.
In 2024, the Bureau won the Excellence in Evaluation award from the National Legislative Performance Evaluation Society (NLPES), which annually presents the award to an office that made significant contributions to the field of program evaluation over a four-year period of time. In addition, the Bureau has been awarded the Certificate of Impact from NLPES every year for more than a decade. This award is presented annually for evaluations or audit reports that resulted in documented public policy changes, program improvements, dollar savings, or other public impacts. The Bureau also received a 2024 Notable Documents Award for two evaluation reports published in 2023.

What Will You Do?
As a Performance Evaluation Director, you will report to and collaborate closely with the State Auditor while representing the Bureau in interactions with officials from across state government. As a member of the Bureau’s senior leadership team, the Performance Evaluation Director performs responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
- Managing the work of evaluation team leaders, establishing expectations, assessing performance, and taking responsibility for evaluation work assigned by the State Auditor;
- Meeting frequently with evaluation teams to review analyses, plan additional evaluation work, and develop tentative analytical conclusions for further consideration;
- Performing quality assurance procedures by reviewing audit documentation;
- Facilitating and participating in staff development and recruiting;
- Effectively balancing staffing resources to meet deadlines;
- Preparing and implementing plans to meet audit objectives;
- Developing appropriate and thorough analyses based on adequate and sufficient audit evidence;
- Monitoring each evaluation to ensure quality and completeness of the evaluation work;
- Preparing timely and accurate evaluation reports.

Requirements
Who Are You?
- You are able to maintain strict nonpartisanship.
- You have a minimum of seven years of relevant leadership experience, including leading, motivating, and developing staff.
- You have a minimum of ten years of experience in the field of performance evaluation, auditing, or a closely related field.
- You have experience in public policy analysis and methods of measuring program effectiveness and efficiency.
- You have experience in determining appropriate research strategies, planning and conducting complex performance evaluations, and leading others in performing these functions.
- You have demonstrated an ability to effectively promote a positive, productive work environment in a team setting.
- You possess substantial critical-thinking, analytical, multi-tasking, writing, and oral communication skills.
- You have a degree in an academic discipline emphasizing analytical skills or policy analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- You have knowledge of the principles, practices, standards, and applications of performance evaluation in government.
- You have an extensive understanding of government policies, budgets, management, and operations.
